when I went out for lunch, i thought i would need my jacket - it was grey looking…but no rain, as the forecaster kept threatening us with. i went into a bathroom at the hearst women’s gym and it was steaming hot - there was a old fashioned heater, next to the full-length mirror…the type you use hit for more heat….umm…think Bette Midler and Barbra Hersey, trying to bang on their apartment heater in Beaches. Something like that. After walking around for lunch, I was breaking a bit of a sweat. From the weather, not from the walking.
This story from the San Jose Mecury made me think - do I agree/support what this chick is doing? After thinking about it….I think she’s just a spoiled brat trying to avoid consequences….I know I don’t have the whole history on this….but I don’t remember reading about the free speech activists, back in the 60’s - bitching about how it’s so unfair to be treated so badly in prison - hell - they were proud to be criminals - to show to the nation that these are unjust laws. Like Rosa Parks being locked up, like the SNIC students trying to register black voters. These people were aware of the consquences and they didn’t try to clean up their prison records. Those criminal charges were worn as badges of honor, in the fight for equality in the south.
I think by this Cal student attempting to get ALL charges dropped, she’s avoiding responsiblity for her actions. She wants her record lily white - to be able to protest, disrupt civil order, run amok on the laws which keep chaos in check - without the burden of a bloody criminal charge to her name. When it comes down to it, she’s not an actvist in jail, she’s simply being a coward.
