Queenkv’s Brainpickings

Exploring the other side of the rainbow

sleepy time…

finished up typing up a report of sorts for our congressional hunt assignment…every monday morning - we have a seminar about the government….

for the assignment - we were paired up and told to report back on something from the federal alphabet soup….I got GAO and CBO. My partner wanted GAO. So on Friday, I took the blue line down to Federal Center, SW - and walked into the Ford Building. The Congressional Budget Office is on the 4th floor. I’m pretty sure anybody could go up there. But I had my press id, just in case. On the 4th floor - there are these wooden shelves with reports on anything from defense spending to social security.

I also wanted a copy of the Budget outlook that was released last week. One staff member, who was out on a smoking break - pointed us in the right direction. He said you could smoke in the cafeteria….but that was a little weird to him…

past midnight and past my bedtime.

getting dark outside…

on the east coast….it gets dark here….faster than Chicago and LA…probably not as fast as London….In London - sunset was around 3 or 4….I ended up walking home by dusk….

spent an hour and a half on the phone with my station. Discussed interview questions and the future of broadcast. It was a long conversation….

now….back into limbo

my world tilted

last night - i went to a potluck thrown by three righteous babes. it was lovely to sit down to all that comfort food. it was also quite nice to have the broadcast and print students chilling together….we sit on opposites sides of the newsroom. often times, one professor would pull out the bulky grey divder to do a seminar and to perform cult news ceremonies. honest.

good music….funny conversation….red wine….laughter…..just what we needed after working our asses off, these past few weeks…

then i got a call from my dad…i could barely make out the ring tone i assigned to him - alde vise, from the sound of music. but i heard it and i took the call in the hallway….away from the laughter….

he told me my brother was leaving for iraq this fall.

a few good points…

Last Sunday….the homily was quite interesting….the priest said commercial fisherman typically have to fool the fish to come inside the net….but when Jesus was talking about being “a fisher of men” - it’s not about fulling the humans. Instead - the Gospel and the Lord’s message needs to be explained and understood before humans could start to give themselves up to God’s net.

A week before that, we had another interesting homily. This priest said during his seminary years, he had an atheist friend. His friend was really into learning about religions…and he told him, that if he could one day believe that the Lord did all these miracles, that he died and came back from life and saved us from death - then he would have to enter the church on bended knees. It amazed me that a non-believer could be so eloquent about my faith.

text messages

this week has been busy….during a chat with an AP reporter at yesterday’s US Conference of Mayors: “…may have something to do with a little big party on Thursday.”

I ended up doing some interviews at Arlington Cemetery….I had this strange idea that I would be finished by six and I could meet Mark at the Press Club to workout.

I started getting some weird text messages on my mobile….Steph said something like “…you must have a good view of the standoff from there.” Then I heard from Mark, who managed to sneak into downtown, via car, early. He went to get some coffee….”I’m at *$ (starbuck’s) with some Secret Service people.”

Since I was out at the cemetery….I had no idea what was going on. A block away from our newsroom…a Michigan man drove his van as close to the White House as possible…

Then we took Metro back to the newsroom….my professor said, “Isn’t it great to be in the middle of all this news?”

I was still clueless….

Then I saw the images of the red van and the SWAT teams….I recognized the gate. I was there yesterday filming b-roll of the empty stands and inaugural construction for my story. I asked my professor if she needed me to shoot some b-roll of the stand-off…she said all the other news crews were making a circus out of it….typical for the inaguration week.

Crazy. I ended up staying late in the newsroom - working on my other story and editing. Thankfully, Mark stayed with me in the newsroom. It would have felt kinda freaky being by myself and being a block away from a potential disaster.

The SWAT teams and Secret Service didn’t get trigger-happy.
The dude gave himself up after four hours. Apparently it was a family tiff.

Crazy.

dim sum and dosai

Mark had the day off for the MLK holiday….I didn’t.

He managed to head downtown to our newsroom and we checked out the dim sum offerings in Chinatown….

DC’s Chinatown is about a half-a-block long. We found spot that had dim sum and service with a smile….this is rare for us. After our last experience with dim sum in London’s Chinatown….we’re not use to good-old fashioned customer service.

America’s Black Forum

Today, I saw the next taping of America’s Black Forum. Our professor in the newsroom is a commentor on the show. The taping was at these studios in the DC offices of Reuter’s TV. So, it was neat to check out those offices.

The whole taping was thrilling for me….the commentors discussed the fate of another regular journalist to the show, - Armstrong Williams. It was truly a personal show for these folks and many consider Williams a dear friend.

NPR’s Juan Williams moderated the show. I remember listening to his reports on Morning Edition - while I drived to work in Berkeley. Meeting him was another thrill for me.

And it was a good show - it airs this Sunday.

i should install spellcheck on my blog….

My auntied e-mailed me today….

“I go to your website regularly to check how you’re doing and I’ve noticed that you always spell the word “opportunity” as oppertunity. I hope you won’t mind my pointing this out to you.

Hmmm…I thought that was the phonetic spelling of that word….ok…joking. Yeah…sorry about the mis-spellings…sometimes I’m justing typing on the run and I didn’t spell-check the entry…and other times…well…I’m just careless - no worries on spelling errors for my news stories - they go through a few levels of editing before they’re sent off to the press. Even then…I found one caption, for a picture I got published, that spelled Berkeley : Berkley…..I checked my story and my e-mail and I got it right….so it was the newspaper who slipped up.
