Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Representing at Dulles

So, last Friday - I interviewed a beagle working for Homeland Security. Comet’s a detector dog - looking for illegal food. Yes, this is breaking news. I do have some cute pix of this beagle.

As we left the airport - I stuck my pre-paid ticket into the slot. Before I pulled out of the parking lot, while my window was rolled down, I heard someone yell: “GO BEARS!”. I gave him a thumbs up.

My photographer asked if I had something on my car and I mentioned I had a Bears license plate. Then he said it’s nice to hear some lovin’ from Chicago. I told him that wasn’t it. I had a Golden Bears plate. Then he got it.

He got it. We got into a nice conversation about the Bears were robbed of Rose Bowl glory.

Go Bears!

the many ways to keep working while under the influence of a cold.

i think i’m getting better. then i saw some snowflakes fall….now i’m a bit worried. dc local news casts have posted reporters in various locations through virginia, maryland and the district. all are bundled up and waiting for snow fall. if they were getting over the sniffles like me, it would probably be a lousy assignment.

it’s suppose to be in the 60’s in LA and other parts of Cali. lucky.

my professor told me i should go home and rest, last week. i suppose i sounded miserable. my throat clutched up every time i wanted to breathe or talk. this is not exactly a good thing for a reporter. it makes me look pretty bad when i’m trying to conduct interviews with people.

at dulles international - i worked on this story about detector dogs…since i couldn’t stop coughing, the PR lady and the handler kept asking me if i needed some water or a cough drop.

seeing is believing

I’m a huge fan of the Daily Show. I often can’t stay up late enough to watch it. I’m usually up by 5:30 - so this old woman needs her rest. But I like catching the re-runs in the afternoon. Yesterdat, I watched Jon Stewart interview Peter Jennings of ABC. Wow.

It’s not like this is Stewart’s first interview with real news anchors - he had Andersen Cooper and Brian Williams on the show, as well.

I thought this interview was cool because it was about Jenning’s next 2 hour report on aliens.

I also saw Triumph the dog….from Conan O’Brien’s show…he wrecked havoc during the Grammy’s. Hilarious segment.

so much for my South Beach attempt…

my QT friend recomended the South Beach diet to me….I bought the big blue book and I did my best to stick with for the last week and a half. I had to take a little break from the diet and my lent promise to avoid meat this weekend….since the family we stayed with in western PA - were carniovres and carb-addicts…well, I didn’t want to be a burden in face of all the meals they had planned for us. Ribs, potatoes, bread, lot’s of bread, pancakes, pot roast…good stuff.

So, I got back on the diet on Tuesday….and then I came down with something wicked in my throat last night. My head felt like it was going to explode and I had hot and cold chills…sheesh. It started snowing this morning. Mark drove me to the newsroom…what a sweetie! Thank you Mark! We stopped at Au Bon Pain for coffee. I knew I needed some breakfast since I’m heading to Arlington this morning for a shoot. So, I broke the diet rule and got a cheese bagel for breakfast….

from the past few weekends…

OK - I’ve been slacking on my personal reviews of DC food and movies…so, time to play catch.

A few weeks ago - I had a craving for Indian food…I asked around at the Press Club for some hints…they sent us towards Dupont Hell…I mean Dupont Circle…we found Indique.

Since it’s lent and it was a Friday - Indian food is always a safe bet for veggie dishes. The main entrees went for anywhere between $12-$20…but the small plates were under $7. I had mussels in curry leaves and coconut soup….yum. The soup was rich, chock fully of veggies and the mussles easily slid off the shells. We also split the calamari ullarthiyathe - tossed with shallots, giner, hot pepper and mustard seeds. I snatched a few patties from Mark’s Aloo Tikki….oh yeah, also good….small potato patties stuffed with spiced lentils. Not as filling as I expected - but the patties made a good side dish.

another skating dream…

we visited Kane and his family in Western PA - for President’s Day Weekend….it snowed a bit, but it was a relaxing trip. We got caught up on our Battlestar Galactica episodes…we missed last Friday because of a party through one of Steph’s artistic friends.

So we played with the kids - I visited my first WalMart Superstore…my God! It’s big…unnecessarily so….and we got a tour of Kane’s brick plant. We learned how to make bricks.

swinging through the District….

Just finished another day on this merry-go-round I like to call “DC Broadcast.”

Luck, chaos, depression, pride, frustration, chills, thrills and more…I suppose it’s more like Russian Roulette. It’s been a busy week - press conference, house member interview and sorta spot story on the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

My professor asked me if I could handle two states, two stations on my own….the other girl covering Kentucky got a job at America’s Most Wanted….Sweet!

On top of that….we had our career center folks dropping into the newsroom, from Evanston. They looked over resumes and cover letters….our photog said when these ladies come up from Evanston, you know the quarter is almost over.

I should go home….I’m paying too much for parking. I need to get some sleep…the last two days started at around 4 AM…just enough time to consume a few articles from the Post and get my butt down to the newsroom. Today, I headed down to the Press Club to workout before the newsroom.

Last night….I went to bed so disappointed with myself.

Today…I had a chance to redeem myself….I didn’t screw up….I filed a nice piece on a Kentucky veteran….he gave me a hug at Quantico.

from the bowels of the Capitol…

I covered a press conference the other day…down in the basement of the Capitol.

I got stop at the security checkpoint. Apparently my umbrella looked funny to the security guards.

stalling…

Trying to get over a case of writer’s block on my application. Sheesh - you would figure I’d be more motivated to get a job and establish some meaning in my life…..grad school ends in March and all I want to do is go home and sleep.

ash wed dream

I’ve had some pretty early mornings - the past few days. We went to the 7 AM Mass for Ash Wed. And this morning - I covered the Illinois breakfast on the Senate side.

We did a light non-meat dinner at Red Lobster - last night.

Then I had a totally weird dream.
