Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Sex, drugs and a towel….

Ok - it sounds like I’m setting you up for one movie review….and not several….

My bad.

Last night - we saw “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” After the film - I headed across the street to the Tower Records store and bought the first two books in the Douglas Adams series. I’ve tried to read the first book - before. But I kept falling asleep. I suppose I just picked bad times to read the book. Plus - I read the first part in Mark’s huge 1,000+page collection of all the Douglas Adams books - so it was a bit scary to plow through. The second time I tried to get into the series was on a road trip up to the Bay Area. Steph brought it along and we took turns reading it to each other. By the time Arthur Dent made it on to the Volgon ship - I was out like a light. Cars make me sleepy.

I had a blast at the film - it had 3 dudes from Love Actually. The English bloke who plays the hero of the movie, Arthur Dent, is was the guy who did the body stand-ins for other actors in love scenes, in Love Actually. Alan Rickman was perfect as the clincally depressed robot with a brain “the size of a planet.”

Douglas Adams also wrote the screenplay for the film. According to one of his fans, my honey, the film translated the book quite nicely. I think the audience was a nice mix of sci-fi fans and Douglas Adams readers.

The earth is blown-up - but it’s quiet demolition is only the beginning of this intergalatic adventure and quest for the ultimate question. It’s a great ensemble of characters - from the repulsive and buearcratic Volgons to the multiple personalities of the President of the Galaxy.

It had good advice for the novice hitchhiker - don’t panic….don’t forget your towel. When the book had more information on travel quirks and alien profiles - it was inserted into the narrative with dry wit and animation. Arthur Dent takes in his hitchhiking experience with a hefty dose of paranoia, morality and humor. Not bad for a man who saw his planet blown away so that a galatic highway could be built through our solar system.

Another nice bonus - checking out the trailer for the last Star Wars film. Finally.

“So long and thanks for all the fish…”

I think I have the comments working…again….

My domain host disabled my comments script - too much spam. I hate spammers.

So, I did some futzing with the script and some other settings….I also installed MT-Approval - to ensure a more human response on my comments. Also - thanks to the blog Learning Movable Type - for additional instructions to configure the plugin. You all rock!

Yeah! Hopefully friends and human beings can post to this blog now….

I turned off commenting for my DC, Chicago and Eurotrip blogs…simply because they’re not being updated with new stuff….

Spammers and telemarketers are scum….honestly.

back in school…

A few nights ago, I had a dream about being in the bay area…

It was at night and I dumped a white bag into the trunk of my black Corolla. The bag had the corpse of a brunette I killed a few minutes before….

Apparently she was homework.

“…can’t take my eyes off of you….”

SAN DIMAS — Munching on some potato salad at Coffee Bazar….damn good stuff….a shame the wifi keeps flaking out like blonde.

For folks who didn’t know….I started up a new photoblog on our road trips. I also updated my wedding blog.

We had a bunch of people in my parent’s cute little house on last Saturday for aparty/feast for my brother. My aunts came up to my room to check out the wedding dress….thank you Jen for taking those beautiful pictures. My auntie spied an old picture of my brother and me, in a tiny silver frame. We were in some restaurant booth and I held my Cabbage Patch doll in the middle.

She laughed, “Do you remember how I used to make you cry over that doll?” she asked me. “I kept telling you it was such an ugly doll and you kept bringing it everywhere.”

I suppose I’ve graduated from ugly dolls to alcholic bears. A few weeks ago, Jen speculated the bears picked up something from their travels.

“You don’t know where their butts have been,” she told me. “They sit everywhere.”

“They’re inoculated,” I retored on the phone.

“With what? Febreeze?”

Maybe I should toss the bears into the washing machine some day.

blogging off the Strip

LAS VEGAS — Watching “Charmed” at Ate Gigi’s place…It’s nice to have an oasis - away from the smoke and noise of Sin City. Ate G’s currently re-doing her statistics exam.

It’s about 60 degrees and windy out here. That makes it a cold day in Vegas.

I had a great time at the conference. I avoided the $10 parking fee by having Mark dropping me off at the Hilton.

I was late to the first session because I couldn’t take my eyes off CNN this morning….I watched smoke burning at the Vatican. It looked dark at first….and then the bells.

It’s amazing to me that we visited Vatican City last fall….saw were the Popes were buried….attended mass…

I felt thrilled to witness news breaking on the other side of the world. I watched folks pouring into the Piazza to cheer the bells, the smoke and chant: “We have a Pope! We have a Pope!” I imagined people still on shift - waiters, cashiers and more - leaving their posts to see the new leader of the Catholic Church.

As a Catholic - I felt relieved that the Church process worked - a new leader elected by the Cardinals. I also crossed myself after the Pope’s first blessing to his people in Rome and to the world….but I am also concerned…the German Cardinal…now Pope Benedict XVI…is a very conservative man. I suppose as the keeper the Church Dogma - he had to be so. But I’m worried about the people who feel un-welcomed by the Church.

Funny…people at the conference were busy attending the sessions and several folks had no idea a new Pope was elected. It felt good being the bearer of news.

blogging from the Las Vegas Hilton

LAS VEGAS — Wow….trying to network and trying to get a job at this huge RTNDA conference.

$10 parking - what the heck! I’ve never had to pay for parking in Vegas. Ever….C’est la vie…

$8.50 for 8 oz of water!

It’s extremely breezy - you can feel it when you’re driving. Folks are dressed in business best. A ton of students…need to make friends…it sucks to be shy and introverted.

Found my Medill professor. Thank God! A friendly face.

Staying with Ate Gigi and Freddie. Freddie is such an old man and such a lap dog! He wouldn’t let me leave this morning. I need Mark to distract him.

Mark plugged into Ate G’s cable modem and he’s working - such a good telecommuter.

OK - on to this networking business….

Does anybody want to be my friend?

Hello Beach…

newport

I drove down to Newport Beach - yesterday.

Paradise.

Before my beach time….I felt battered by losing the job in NY….stressed about finding work in TV News….and overwhelmed by wedding stuff.

Then I got to the beach. Warm sunshine, sea breeze and the sand squishing between my toes.

Heaven.

The nice thing about visiting this beach - it was the middle of the week and in the middle of April….people are still working and going to school….Sure, we had some beach bums invading my turf…but there plenty of room for everyone.

Akbar

This week - we went down to old town Pasadena for our first yoga class in So. Cal.

All that stretching worked up an appetite - so we parked closer to Colorado. We checked out a few spots - Brazillian and Spanish Tapas…a bit rich for our blood. Then - just off Fair Oaks Ave - we found Akbar.

It’s part of a chain of Indian restaurants in the LA area.

In Pasadena, we had friendly and helpful service plus a side of nice chill and romantic ambience.

The chill atmosphere, the ice water and the Cab were soothing counterparts to the exploding spices of the house chutney. Granted, I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to spicy foods….but Mark said he found them to be a hot as well. A second opinion always helps…

Looking back at one happy couple…

New Year’s Eve in Chicago

Originally uploaded by queenkv.

I got my iMac hooked up to my dad’s router. A bunch of my pix from last year are stored on here….I plan on uploading pix from my cross-country trip and my NY adventure to this machine…my shitty laptop only has 300 MB’s available on the hard drive.

Woe is me.

I like this pix of us from Chicago - New Year’s Eve….a few days before I started up my graduate program at Medill.

Back then, the only thing was sure about was my career path - one way or another, I’m going to make it as a news producer. Someday.

At the beginning of my quarter, I wasn’t sure about the whole bonding experience with my classmates…tell you to the truth, I wasn’t even sure about what would happen to my relationship with Mark. We knew we wanted to take a whack at the long-distance relationship - we knew we couldn’t bear breaking up with each other.

And now…after Medill - I came away with some dear friends whom I can bear my heart to. I also came away with some nice bling on my finger…and today, not only am I still chasing after that dream to be a new producer - I’m also taking a whack at the guest list for our wedding.

whoa.

I suspect I can handle the whole marriage-bit…the wedding planning seems big to me. Maybe too big.But I’m sure we’ll make it through, somehow.

Someday.

coffee and a car chase….

COVINA — I woke up around 11 AM - Eastern.

Did some yoga…put my clothing away….read up on the bridal prep by Melania Knauss in Vogue….damn, if I had the money to fly around to Paris and the fashion houses and get some incredible designers to whip up my dream wedding outfit….

c’est la vie. i’ll find something.

it’s good to be home…

made some coffee…rooted around for the makings of a south beach friendly diet. i decided on shrimp and shumai….

sipped some coffee…checked e-mail…and watched an LA car chase on CNN…live.

Damn, it’s good to be home.
