John Cho at the AAJA San Francisco Gala

Last Sunday night, John Cho delievered the key note address for the gala at Yank Sing in San Francisco. It’s the chapter’s 20th anniversary. We also have Pei-chun Liao in the picture. She’s the 10pm news anchor for KTSF - one of the few Chinese-language stations in the country. She had plenty of questions about our August wedding. She really wanted this pix with John Cho. She just watched Harold and Kumar and she thought it was really funny.
John Cho graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in English. He got his first break with the stage production of “The Woman Warrior” at Berkeley Rep. During his speech, he said his dad thought he wanted to be famous. So he recomended a career as a news anchor. Cho looked up at the AAJA journalists and said we would have made his parents proud.
It’s interesting to note that he said he feels a responsiblity to honestly portray Asian-American characters on the big screen. Before taking on a role in House, MD - he insisted on getting rid of the Asian-pidgen accents of the parents of his character.
When we took the picture - I told him I graduted from Berkeley and he gave me a “Go Bears.” Then he put his arm around me for the pix. Ah yeah!

David tried to check the wireless in the aiport. It didn’t work. I think this is my dad’s post office worker outfit. I told him he looked like he worked at the post office.

Like most Geminis, you are a playful little creature.
You tend to be extremely curious, craving knowledge but sometimes having a short attention span.
For the most part, you are charming and loveable.

blogging from a cybercafe in Oakland…

OAKLAND — Which is strange for me….typically, I’ve seen cybercafes crash and burn in the bay area. However, when I went to school in Illinois - a spunky chain of cybercafes did well in Evanston and downtown Chicago. Go fig.

I’m printing out my resumes at this cybercafe on Telegraph. It’s in this square were I did Korean BBQ and karoke with the Unit 3 CA’s. Good times.

I scheduled an informational meeting with one station manager. Wish me luck….

Perfect….

OAKLAND — Blogging from our hotel room, just outside of Chinatown. This is my entry for Moody Monday - Perfect.
I think the California coast is perfect - beautiful and peaceful. It’s breathtaking. I wish I could live here.

A postcard from the edge?

BERKELEY — A British blogger posted this neat idea of sending out postcards to blog visitors…..what a neat idea! I love sending out postcards.

OK - I’ll give this a try….this is going out to all of you - blog visitors and stuff….

I’d love to send you a postcard…from wherever I end-up….if you would like one…go ahead and e-mail me your mailing address - ok?

In the land of the hairy female armpits…

BERKELEY — Working on my resume tapes at Haas. The lab is closed for the weekend. We saw people walking to graduation ceremonies. I thought they didn’t have those on Sunday, but they do.

Yesterday - we ate a lot. Each time we spent time with friends - it was either for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

In any event - the Bay Area is a great place for eating.

I’m picking up my running habit when we get back to LA. Before we left - I ran/walked/panted about three times a week. It’s flat in Covina and that made it easier to get from point A to point B.

It’s still sunny and beautiful up here. We picked a fab weekend to visit Berkeley, Oakland and SF.

And yesterday - we also did coffee on College Ave. Sunny days include people wearing tank tops. Girls wearing tank tops. Girls who don’t shave and wear tank tops. I think you get the picture. Sure, I know it’s their choice and lord knows, I should be used to it after living in the Bay Area for 7 years. But I’m not.

A sunny day for the Golden Bears

FREE SPEECH CAFE, BERKELEY — I read through articles from BBC, NY Times and the East Bay Express….it’s funny to walk on campus - again - as an alumni…my account still works for wireless - so I took advantage of it. It’s beautiful on campus. Students waltzed down Oxford and Center street - dressed in fluffy skirts, t-shirts, tie and suits and graduation robes. I should have worn a tank top today. Almost 70 degrees outside.

A girl fell alseep at her table - folks are still studying for finals. Her friend suggested she take a nap at the padded grey benches. She told her the cafe staff would wake her up if she did so.

My brother is gone. Now there’s a hole in my heart.

When Berkeley first installed it’s wireless access points - David printed out the locations and tested out the connections with his tiny $500 laptop. It was like a treasure hunt for him. He sat in this cafe - for hours - checking e-mail and reading.

On the movie front - I watched Episode 3 last night. It was good. I bought a deck of cards at the Meteron. We waited for a little more than an hour in line - to get decent seats. We played gin rummy. I won. Is Bush really Chancellor Palpatine?

The job hunt is still driving me bonkers - but people tell me it’s normal and to be expected - since the news industry is difficult to break into. I met up with KALX people this week - sniffing out job tips and contacts. I got some.

Marching against carrots

FAIRFIELD, CALIF — We’re currently in the Bay Area…David’s getting activated. He flies to Texas tomorrow. I don’t know when I’ll get to see him again. Currently blogging from a Holiday Inn - just off the 80.

David told us about this activation ceremony at Travis Air Base. We took off from LA at 6:00 AM. The night before, I took Mark and his dad to Pasadena for Mark’s b-day dinner….Happy B-Day Mark!!!! OK - back to this morning - we zoomed down the 210. We avoided breakfast food and Starbucks in order to escape LA highway gridlock. We succeeded. We made it to Coalinga….passed the smelly cow pasture. I promised myself I’d avoid eating meat tonight. Something about the smell of those who were about to die…just off the freeway. It killed my appetite for cow meat.

We passed a sign for Sacramento - only 166 miles away. It was 10 AM. Mark and I agreed we’d be at Dad’s hotel by Noon.

Then all traffic came to a halt. We found ourselves trapped on the highway 5 parking lot. And it was enough to make us late for David’s ceremony….and it felt like the Air Force punished us for being stuck in traffic.
