Queenkv’s Brainpickings

Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Apparently, I’m the snob who dissed on Napoleon Dynamite.

I found this quiz on Christine’s blog. In the movie, Napoleon drew this picture to ask Trisha out to the school dance. At Pedro’s urging, he was trying out his “skills”.

Trisha
You are Trisha.

Which Napoleon Dynamite character are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

Napoleon Dynamite: I spent like three hours doing shading the upper lip. It’s probably the best drawing I’ve ever done.
Trisha: Yeah… it’s really… neat.

Mark also took the quiz and got this character:

Pedro
You are Pedro Sanchez and love holy chips.

Trapped at a coffee house…

SAN DIMAS — We just finished our salads at the Coffee Klatch when a lady walked up to us and asked, “Do you want to be in a movie?” Apparently, the city of San Dimas is filming a PR flim at our favorite little cafe.

We said sure. So…we’re kinda stuck at this cafe until they finished shooting. Dude….the last time I was an extra in a movie was when the filmed Ocean’s 11 at the Bellagio.

Mark: “We weren’t extras in Ocean’s 11.”
Me: “But we were close.”
Mark: “Yeah, Brad Pitt waved to us.”
Me: “He wanted me.”

They’re setting up a sweet little digital camera on a tripod. They’re looking for a spot to pose their “host.”

I love LA.

Kid 606 and Buttom of the Hudson

I got some time on hands, so I did a few more CD reviews for the station.

Kid606 - Resilience

It’s a more mature album. For the early tracks, Kid606 focuses on creating lush texture soundscapes. It’s a sharp contrast to the loud and frenetic acid/house/techno mixes from his earlier albums. In fact, it’s nothing like his mix during this July electronica concert at Koo’s. Mark mentioned something about the music being so loud and intense that his felt like their were bledding. Good stuff. Mellow music is also good. Most of the tracks on Resilience are laidback, melodic and catchy - something I didn’t expect from Kid606. According to the Tigerbeat6 Review - all the songs were composed either at home or on tour, “from the isolated coldness of Stavenger, Norway to the claustrophobic heat of Athens, Greece.” It’s a lovely album - play it often. Resilience was released on Tigerbeat6

Bottom of the Hudson - Holiday Machine
Another decent indie rock album by Bottom of the Hudson. Some tracks take you on the melancholic trip down to 1990’s memory lane. Other tracks toss back some sass and attitude - jangly guitars and semi-ironic lyrics. It’s not a masterpiece, but it should mix in nicely with Guided by Voices, Pavement, Sebadoh.
Holiday Machine was released on Absolutely Kosher Records.

On our first night in Ixtapa, we decided to go to a fiesta. According to our tour dude at the hotel, Monday nights have the Mexican bands and dancers…but on Wed nights - the fiesta features non-Mexican bands and dancers…

We got to the fiesta site a bit early, so we took our first wallk on the beach. Beautiful.

Smelling bread baking….

BERKELEY — I’m chilling inside Sufficient Grounds with a Thai Iced Coffee. It’s across the street from Spens-Black, my first res hall in Berkeley. I used to read my NY Times and drink coffee at this cafe, before my classes. Yummy sandwiches, with fresh baked bread and a tasty pasta salad. I used to piss off students and professors when I brought in a Sufficient Grounds sandwich box into lecture….hell, when you’re hungry, you gotta eat. My DBHS buddy, Seon, used to work on her essays at the cafe. Her Korean cliche knew the owner and they always had dibs on the big side table. Seon dropped out of Cal during our second year to become a clothing designer…behind her Mom’s back. Her mom had her own lining of clothing. Eventually, she ended up a design school just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. I called her after 9/11. She wasn’t hurt and her school was still in one piece. She told me it was disconerting to go to class and see the ruins of those massive buildings.

More Pictures before the Wedding Ceremony…

OK - since I got time…I’ve used that extra time to upload more pix from the wedding. Thanks to Andrea, Mita, Uncle Truck, my Dad and any one else who used a digital camera to snap up these lovely pix. Thank you!

Emeryville Market Musings….

EMERYVILLE — We’re back in the Bay Area so Mark can catch up on work and pick up his nifty new laptop. Today, I grabbed lunch at the international market place in Emeryville. I got a combo plate from the Thai food stand. Pad Thai and Beef Curry. Hearty and yum. Lunchtime forces strangers to be generous with table space. I was no exception. A couple of yuppies joined my table with a word of thanks. A dude with the grande quesdilla asked me if my combo dish was spicy. I said no. I tried to read my USA Today….but some folks feel like they need to share their dating adventures with the rest of the world….and at top volume.

One of his co-workers launched into a bitch session about a date he went on with a gril from his office. Apparently, they went dancing with one of her guy friends. At the end of the night, he said the girl told him she got the number for the club owner. “We can go here for free, next time,” he recalled her saying. His office mates expressed some concern about that. Apparently it’s not in good taste to be scoring digits while you’re on a date with another guy. His female co-workers said the girl may have said that to get a reaction out of him.

A few days later, they made plans to see a movie with one of his female friends. They spent about an hour trying to figure out which movie to see. He said they agreed to figure it out later. When later rolled around, his female friend called and told him the girl couldn’t go to the movies with them. “She said under her breath something about going to a wedding with her baby’s daddy,” he told his office mates.

The next day, he said when he brought the failed movie attempt, she told him she totally forgot about it.

Damn, thank God I’m not dating any more. It sounds rough out there!
