We drove out to Kansas City last Saturday. Part of the city is in Kansas and the other part is in Missouri. It was like driving from Covina to Vegas….but faster. It took us about 50 minutes to cross the state border.

Folks at the station recomended the Plaza. OK - there’s two Plaza shopping centers. We ended up at the Country Club Plaza - which had a sweet Christmas light display at night. I enjoyed Kansas City. I felt comfortable among the high-rise apartment buildings. Maybe I’m a city girl at heart.

It was a beautiful day - warm and sunny. We ended up walking around without our jackets. The Plaza had plenty of high-end stores, Armani and the like….plus an Apple Store. We were content window shopping and eating. We had some tasty Mexican food at Baja 360. They had tiki torches burning around the patio seating area. We dipped inside Better Cheddar and sampled a lot of cheese. I loved my cookie bit dipped in clotted cream with brandy and jam. The first time I tasted clotted cream was at high tea in London. It’s light, sweet and rich. I looked around for clotted cream in American grocery stores with no luck. So inside this cheese store, I bought my own bottle of clotted cream.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, Mark and I figured we could do this Turkey dinner business after a dress rehersal. So we roasted a chicken. Yummy. We did pretty good, considering it was our first roasted chicken. Hell, it looks nice in the picture and it tasted good. We cooked most of it.

Next time, we’ll get a string to tie up the legs. I didn’t expect digging out the gibblets to feel so disgusting. I stuck my hand in and pulled out these slimy, squishy jello-like body bits. Now I know I didn’t have the nerves to be a doctor. Ewww.

Later that week, my co-worked invited us over for Thanksgiving dinner. Yeah! We didn’t have to worry about roasting the turkey. We dumped it in the freezer and have plans to thaw it out, later. So, I made a pasta side disk with smoked clams and prosciutto. Mark baked two pecan pies with Maker’s Mark. The bourbon tasted awesome with the whip cream.

All clear…

Well, our little weather adventure lasted about an hour. It looked like dusk at about 3:00 pm - yesterday. Then the rains died down and the sun popped out. We saw a rainbow over I-70.

On Thanksgiving - we spent part of the afternoon on the phone with our families in Cali and NY. Folks sounded like they were having a good time. My mom said my Ate Ludett made a yummy mango cake - with fresh mangos. I’m happy to hear Nate got our postcards from Mexico. I figured Mexican donkeys were carrying our mail across the border.

My first tornado watch

Wow - thunder, hail, rain and possible tornados. Weather dudes keep interrupting the Chief’s game and other programming. It looks like Topeka’s getting clipped. They’re talking about golf-sized hail. Wow. They’re telling people at Fort Riley and surrounding areas to get inside a basement….

Uh…well we’re not in those counties…uh…but we don’t have a basement here. I’m sure we’ll be fine. Mark was about to go out to the store for whip cream. We have left-over pies. We decided to just stay home until these tornados blow away.

Exciting…kinda freaky…..I suggested we drive out and see what we could see. Mark figured I was joking.

Happy Thanksgiving

I found this quiz on groovy chick’s site. She’s going to see “Rent” on the silver screen. Lucky!

Which John Cusack Are You?

I loved this movie! I started reading Nick Hornby’s book in bookstores a while ago. (Bookstores are my libraries - I usually could remember where I left off. I’m in the middle of the beginning of Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked.”)

The record store employees from “High Fidelity” reminded me of volunteers at KALX. Hell, several radio volunteers agreed the movie characters resembled them.

Turkey day. Mark baked some pies for tonight’s Thanksgiving dinner. It should be interesting. I’m planning on whipping up a pasta side dish later this afternoon. Still kinda bummed about not spending the holiday with family - but we have each other. It’s our first Thanksgiving as a married couple. Sigh.

Oh yeah….and Mark just took the test.

We finally got a chance to explore the KU campus on Saturday. It’s a cute little campus with hills and stuff. We walked through Memorial Drive and up to the Campanile. It’s dedicated to the 277 KU alumni,
students, faculty and staff who died in World War II . It’s a touching site. This is Potter Lake. One alumni who works at my company says the students like to call it the “Puddle.”

Mark enjoyed kicking up the dead leaves. He said you couldn’t do that in California.

High Education and Intelligent Design

Typical. This story from the Topeka Capital Journal leads off with a sixteen yeard old who dreams about working on a science degree from Cal. She tells the reporter she knows the difference between science and religious theory. She said she’s worried Cal and other colleges will think she doesn’t know the difference.

Then we have a 12-year-old who thinks she’s getting science classes on intelligent design will prevent fights at her school.
Students, parents fret new standards 11/21/05

“Mekahla will be more prepared than students who only learn evolution,” said her mother, Michelle Peterson. “She can go anywhere she likes for college, but I would be very disappointed if she wanted to go to such a liberal school as U.C. Berkeley.”

I’m not quite sure how this poor girl will be more prepared when universities all over the nation may not accept her intelligent design classes as science. Shouldn’t parents want their kids to have a fighting chance when it comes to higher education?

On anothe Berkeley-related note….Go Bears! Cal won the Big Game on Saturday against Stanfurd. My dad won his bet at work! Yeah! (27-3). We tried catching the game at a few bars in Lawrence - but all we could get is that bottom-left-hand-corner score board. C’est la vie. I’m sure it was a cool game. Go Bears!

Two lattes later….

LAWRENCE — I’m almost finished with my overnight shifts at the news center. I managed to sleep in until 1:00 pm. I suppose my sleep schedule is screwed for the rest of the week. C’est la vie.

I found this adorable poem about the Sunflower State from Modwestern. Garrison Keillor wrote the poem.

Here’s an excerpt from Keillor’s “Kansas Rap”.

Kansas is God’s way of suggesting
Life doesn’t have to be interesting.
He was busy elsewhere fighting sin.
When he created Kansas, he phoned it in.
The land is flat, the wind is blowing,
And we’re halfway to anywhere you’re going.
But if we seem sleepy or in a coma
You know, we’re looked up to by Oklahoma.

A guide to Intelligent Design

LAWRENCE — I could not resist posting parts of this guide from www.kansasmorons.com. The guide also comes in a PDF file.

I remember how my biology teacher at a Catholic high school kicked off her section on evolution. She started with a disclaimer of sorts. She said she understood that she was teaching something that didn’t exactly synch up with the Bible’s creation story. She expressed respect for the majority’s Christian faith (we had a few Hindu students in that class). She also pointed out that this is a science course and she planned on teaching scientific issues. She said she was willing to talk about faith and science with folks who wanted to outside of the classroom. Then she launched into the evolution lesson. Before the high school, I’ve attended private schools and public schools. It was the first time I’ve seen a teacher do this. I thought it was odd that my teacher felt she needed to do this. She impressed me with her straight-forward manner.

Thirteen years later, I’m in a state where science teachers will probably have to launch into a similar disclaimer.

Kansas Food

This is from our first night in our brand new apartment. We were pooped from unloading both Corollas. We had to carry everything up two flights of stairs. That was my workout for the day.

Pizza and beer - the perfect meal after a day of moving. My bears felt entitled to some booze as well.
