Good-bye to Coretta Scott King…

(from home.comcast.net/~netaylor1/corettascottking.jpg)

The widow of Martin Luther King Jr. passed away last night. She was 78. I feel so sad…almost lost. Such a quiet and powerful icon from the Civil Rights Era…a link back to that amazing time.

Zen Zero part Deux!

Ah tasty Zen Zero…we took one of my co-workers to this Asian fusion joint last Friday. She’s from SF and she had a craving for Thai food.

I had the Massaman Curry - a coconut curry dish from southern Thailand with potatoes and peanuts. I ordered the beef version. It was hearty and it also had some interesting peanut overtones. It made for some yummy leftovers the next day.

Before this main entree, I started with the Tom Kha - Thai-style soup with coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, dried chillies, mushrooms, tomatoes, scallions & cilantro. - so rich….it tasted awesome on a snowy night.

Watch me roar!

I found this snazzy game on Cristine’s blog. I think it’s super cool.

Sleeping in the middle of the day…

Ah, the joy of switching to an overnight schedule.

I’ve switched to 2-11 AM shifts this week. I’ve managed to stay awake after my shift and go to bed by around 5 or so. I feel awake at work. I take care of lunch in my first hour and then I get the munchies by the 7th hour or so. Now I understand why my dad can’t wait for us to eat when he gets home from work. As soon as he gets home and drops his stuff off in the bedroom, he heads to the kitchen and fries up some dinner. I’m kinda doing the same thing now. I’ll probably be whipping up some huge breakfast meals when I get off at my regular sign-off time of 7 AM.

Mark installed thick black curtains in the bedroom. Now it’s like a cave during the daytime. Yeah! I’ll probably feel more rested if I can trick my body into thinking it’s falling asleep during evening hours. I love Mark!

Before I forget, I just uploaded the next episode of my podcast.

Last Friday night, Daisy had her first snowfall. I would have snapped a pix, but it was in the evening and everything melted away the next day. (leaving Daisy with some muddy paws to track into the apartment :P ). Mark said she looked adorable in the snow. She kept trying to catch the snowflakes in her mouth. She looked happy.

Before sunrise…

Before sunrise…Daisy and I have our one-on-one time. She does “good potty” and then I make coffee.

Before sunrise, I finish praying and doing yoga. That daily routine has kept me healthy and sane in Chicago and I believe it’s doing the same for me in Kansas.

Before sunrise…I finish reading the local paper and catch-up on CNN Headline News. Why CNN and not, say something more “fair and balanced?”

Headlines

I wake up at 1 AM to head over to the station at 3 AM. These days, I need that extra hour to take care of business. Typically, I’d be at the stations three hours before the first round of folks show up for the morning show.

Such is life.

Earlier this week, I saw our new billboards for our debut date. Joy! I had Mark take a picture of me with the billboard. I’m such a dork.

This story caught my eye this morning:
Vegas Bound.
Joy! Kansas City International is a good hour away from our home in Topeka. Now I can use our Topeka-based airport to visit Ate Gigi and the rest of my family in Vegas.

This story caught the eyes of other stations in Topeka:
School district to halt intelligent design course.
A fine line in this intelligent design course in Cali….basically a “philosophy” course. And that’s cool forum for this subject…but it stuck with only religious theories and it didn’t offer any scientific ones - according to the wires.

I wonder how students of other faiths would feel in that class? Those who don’t believe in a Christian God or the Bible or that the earth was created in seven days….

I’ve asked posed this question before in private emails(and thanks to Mark for suggesting it): “Do you need to believe in God in order to accept/believe in intelligent design?”

Introducing the newest member of our family!

This week, I started my 4 AM to Noon shifts…kinda like a mock rehersal. We’re building the show with local stories for our reporters and other video sources. I think I got my sleep schedule down. Mark has been amazing with helping my adjust to the time change. My eating schedule is fucked.

But this should help when I move to the overnights shifts. It’s fun when we’re racing against a deadling to finish scripts and editing video.

We adopted Daisy from the Helping Hand Society last weekend. She’s five months old. We’ve been talking about getting a puppy for more than a year now. She’s our baby and we’re in love. She love’s the camera. I suspect she get’s her diva attitude from the time she was featured on our rival station during their morning program. Fancy that!

Stalking Pandas in my Dock

Every morning, I hit F12 on my keyboard and see what the Pandas are up to at the San Diego Zoo. I am a dork.

Puppy Proofing the Apartment…

Hey - I uploaded my first podcast for 2006.

And we just got back from a concert in Lawrence. Mark pointed out the beautiful and fat moon, glowing orange on the horizon. We also gazed up at the stars….well, Mark did his best to look up at the stars while keeping an eye on the road. No matter how many times I’ve gazed up at the evening sky - on the 5 in California, the 15 in Nevada, the 40 through a bunch of western states or I-70 in Kansas, I never get tired of looking at those beautiful stars. I’m grateful there’s something out there that could make me feel awe and wonder. No matter how old I get, I don’t think I’ll ever take star gazing for granted.

I miss London…

This little blog game seems to suit me quite nicely…I miss Europe and I still long for our little flat next to Bond Street.

You Belong in London

A little old fashioned, and a little modern.
A little traditional, and a little bit punk rock.
A unique woman like you needs a city that offers everything.
No wonder you and London will get along so well.
