Ah tasty Zen Zero…we took one of my co-workers to this Asian fusion joint last Friday. She’s from SF and she had a craving for Thai food.
I had the Massaman Curry - a coconut curry dish from southern Thailand with potatoes and peanuts. I ordered the beef version. It was hearty and it also had some interesting peanut overtones. It made for some yummy leftovers the next day.
Before this main entree, I started with the Tom Kha - Thai-style soup with coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, dried chillies, mushrooms, tomatoes, scallions & cilantro. - so rich….it tasted awesome on a snowy night.
When we made it to Lawrence, my co-worker said it was nice to see other Asian people walking about. I think the three of us took California’s diveristy for granted and didn’t realize how starved we’d be for a city scene with people of color. Such is life. In Topeka’s defense, people have quite nice and friendly. Earlier last Friday, Mark and I went to “Operation Soupline” - a fundraising event for a non-profit agency…They served up some yummy chili and soup. In the soupline, an anchor from another station was one of the celebrity servers. She tried to convince me to go with the veggie soup over the chili…I smiled and I said I was in the mood for chili..So, she gave me a small bowl of veggie soup anyways “Just to try it.” How sweet is that! And when we toured the gift basket area, random strangers would chat with us about the auction items.
People in Topeka are nice…but…well…I still stick out like a sore thumb. I can only imagine how one of them would feel, if they ended up in Manila without their comfort net of family and friends…
