Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Such a beautiful city…this is a shot of Coit Tower from the Ferry Building. I thought it looked cool in black and white. I love San Francisco!

Watching the tide roll away…

We didn’t have a car in San Francisco and we took advantage of BART and Muni. SF has a decent public transportation system. It’s not as rockin’ as London’s Tube (not as timely, reliable and not as far-reaching) however, it’s also nice to give our wallets a break from the crazy gas prices. Here in the Heartland…most people have to drive. There’s a bus stop by my station - but it doesn’t look like it has a schedule that could meet my graveyard shifts. So I drive.

On the other side of City Hall - the Asian Art Museum. It’s in a new location. I remember visiting the museum in Golden Gate Park - next to the Japanese Tea Gardens and the De Young. It was a pain to hike out to that location after taking public transportation as far as we could go…but I had good times there. This new location makes the Asian Art Museum more accessible (close to the Civic Center BART) and it allows the collections to breathe new life.

The world is screwing with me…

I wanted a cocktail and a decent omelette. That’s all. After my morning…was that too much to ask?

Apparently.

I ended up cracking an egg and it spilled on the floor and my pj’s.

Fuck this shit. It feels like the universe was crapping on me.

I recorded Amazing Race and Top Chef last night. I fast forwarded to Top Chef. I needed to see home. The chefs had to cater a wedding for two adorable guys and I loved watching something that reminded me of my own happy day. And what I love about the reality show - in comparison to the Apprentince, the Amazing Race, even my beloved Project Runway…Top Chef is all about the food. You can’t BS someone’s taste buds. I think that’s great! And it makes this show a fantastic test of culinary genius.

After finishing my lemon-pepper cheese omelette with smoked sausage and a couple of ginger-ale whiskey cocktails - I’m in a better mood.

It’s two thousand miles I roamed…

“Smoking…a life-style choice that probably saved all of our lives…”
Anthony Bourdain in Sweden. This is what he told his producer and camera crew during a camping trip in a frigid Swedish tundra. He’s talking about being the only man with lighter to start a fire at their camp site. Yesterday, I watched his latest episode of “No Reservations” on the Travel Channel. I am so hooked on the food and the locales that he races through on this show.

OK - well, I’ll do my best to post pix from my Bay Area trip….and I’m missing Mark - as usual. We do that sick-sweet thing on the phone:

Him: “Wish you were here.”
Me: “Why don’t you fly here?”
Him: “Why don’t you fly here?”
And then I groan ’cause I would if I could but I can’t so I don’t. He flies back to Kansas City next Saturday. Thank heavens for my smelly dog. She reminds me of my dog mom duties and it’s nice to have someone to come home to.

Back to the trip…let’s start on Van Ness…

And this is what San Francisco can do with it’s City Hall…that’s right - this is only a City Hall….other states use this grand style for their state capitols buildings. It took us about 7 minutes to walk to City Hall from the Hotel Monarch. We got a sweet deal on the room from hotels.com. It’s in a great central location to the theaters, food and the sites.

Real Classy…Not Really.

I can’t believe this ended up in a daily…
The Colbert Report touched on this cover the other night…It’s not a photoshop challenge from Fark…it’s the real deal.

And Jossip had more…what the hell were those editors/copy editors/dudes-in-charge - thinking? It’s not that funny. But I suppose respect for any nation’s leader is sacrificed for the catchy headline.

Just a glimpse into my fab weekend in the Bay Area. We spent most of
our time in San Francisco. We managed to make it over to the East Bay
for a new baby and a birthday party. I managed to take trip around the
culinary world during my stay. Plenty of food pix and observations. I
feel tubby and pooped. My alarm didn’t go off last night….so I was
almost late to work…my bad! I’ll have my cell and alarm clock set
for tonight. Now…off to bed.

I’m back…

This morning - I took a 6:45 flight out of Oakland.
I made it back.

Back to the rat race.
Back to news.
Back to juggling egos, expectations and giggles.
Back to my life in Kansas.

I left my heart…

SAN FRANCISCO — Blogging from the Hotel Monarch on Geary - near the AMC theaters and a bunch of cool restuarants. During our stay, we’ve hit on my cravings for yummy ethnic food, drinks and friends. Since Thursday - we’ve had so many different types of food - Peruvian, Indian, Diner, Fine Dining, Mexican, Afghan and more…I miss hanging out with Berkeley buddies and I got to see Betina’s adorable baby! Pictures will be posted shortly.

My plane takes off in a few hours.

I don’t want to leave. But work is calling me…

Countdown to Kansas City International

In less than 20 hours - I will be on a plane to California….YAH! I need this weekend get-away. I can’t wait to see Betina’s new baby. I can’t wait to see my friends. I can’t wait to eat yummy food. I can’t wait to see the Pacific.

Joy!

Washing out the grey….

I’m at the age when I have to worry about these things. According to my mom, grey hair plagues the women in our family at a young age….and I figure 27-going-on-28 is young for old looking hair. So, yesterday, I used a little bit of our tax refund and splured on a new do’. It feels fab in the hot weather. This week - it got up to 90+ degrees in Topeka (and our air conditioner isn’t working :( ).
