Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Bummer…

Ok, this dude was a few years a head of me…but the Naked Guy was still a legend when I started my freshman year at Berkeley. I’m sad to hear he’s gone now.

Sounds like thunder outside…
Mark’s dad is visiting us now for his b-day on Sunday.
Mark and I are also birthday babies…May is a cool month for birthdays! I love being 21 :)
We took a quick jaunt to Vegas for our birthday weekend.

Grassroots Art in the Sunflower State

OK, part two of our roadtrip through North Central Kansas…We traveled south from the World’s Largest Ball of Twine to Lucas, Kansas.

This town looks like other farming communities we passed on the highway….but once you wander off the main road - there’s a treasure trove of mammoth and quirky art installations. Civil war veteran SP Dinsmoor cracked open the door for artistic souls in Lucas when he started building his cabin in the early 1900s.

We got back from Sin City yesterday. I’m pooped from our birthday weekend with my family. I had a blast and I ate well…and I got some pool-side reading in at the Wynn. This is the view from our beautiful room in the Wynn. As always, not enough time to chill, relax, play and indulge…but a welcome break from the work grind.

Bedtime.

The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Version of the World’s Largest Things

Ok….in Lucas…in addition to being the grassroots art capital of Kansas, it’s also the home of: “The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Version of the World’s Largest Things.” Now, it’s a damn shame we couldn’t get inside the bus…but we saw something that evoked deja vu.

500 miles

Happy Birthday to Mark! We went to Old Chicago for his birthday lunch…Mark got lot’s of cards…including one from our baby.

Daisy writes all about it in her new blog. Yes, now the dog is blogging. We had an important conversation about safe online practices. You never know what weirdo would want to take advantage of young puppies on dogster, right? In any event…she’s making nice with other cockers on dogster…she’s just having problems typing with her stubby paws.

And this weekend, we drove over 500 miles…seeing another side of Kansas - a quirky exhibit of community pride and sites that challenge the traditional definitions of art.

Say good-bye to Cody’s….

Cristine had a post about bookstores closing in the Bay Area…and she linked to this SF Gate article.

Cody’s on Telegraph will close on July 10, 2006. It’s been at that location for 43 years….and it was one of my favorite bookstores in Berkeley.

A damn shame.

Watching the tide roll away…

On my last day of this fab weekend - we took BART to the East Bay.

I wanted to see Betina’s new baby.

We had time for breakfast in SF. I wanted to visit the Castro and I suggested the Sausage Factory for breakfast. Mark was curious about how the food tastes…all he remembered from our last visit was being a little too hung over to enjoy the food. Unfortuantely, the Sausage Factory was closed when we got to the Castro. Still, I enjoyed walking around and checking out the shops, cafes and dogs. Such doggie mecca! I remember two cute doggies dolled up in knit sweaters labeled with “DOG”. Too cute.

We passed this plot of land on our last walk in the Castro. I remember the ground was torn up and it looked depressing. Now community members transformed it into this vibrant and quirky garden. Good job you guys!

Misunderstood….or a danger to society?

I browsed through Kansas headlines on google and found a BBC article about Overland Park…the BBC writing about the Sunflower State? Amazing.

But after reading this story…I felt so bad for everyone involved.

Sittin’ in the mornin’ sun…

Anthony Bourdain in Puerto Rico….looks like a beautiful place to visit…live…relax. I’m relaxing with my VCR’ed episode. I need to get a new deck ’cause this machine keeps eating tapes. It’s old and hungry. Just like me when I’m watching No Reservations - and Bourdain stops at restaurant and watches a cook chop up roast pig. My mouth watered. If you grew up with crispy lichon and remained a carnivore - you know where I’m coming from. Damn…when was the last time I had that crispy pig skin…with bits of fat clinging? Sometime last fall, I think. My mouth is still watering. Damn Bourdain - and he just stopped in a town known by locals: “El Pueblo El Chicharron.” Damn…he stopped at a cart and bought a bag of hot chicharron with island bread. It looks frickin’ good.

My mouth is still watering.

OK - back to my gourmet adventures in the Bay Area. During my trip, I was all about the seafood. When I lived here, I used to go to the Farmer’s Market by the Ferry Building. As I browsed the fresh produce, I snacked on Hog Island Oysters and they tasted fresh, rich and meaty. When the Ferry Building opened up new shops, I saw a sign for a Hog Island Oyster Bar - coming soon. On this trip, I made it my mission to find that oyster bar.
