Exploring the other side of the rainbow

Food, Photography and maybe more…

Gridskipper used one of my San Francisco pictures for a review on Bix. I’m tickled they used this shot. Good times in San Francisco with Susan and Tom. Sometimes I’ve toyed with the idea of doing some freelance photography for newspapers and magazines. Then I would have to invest in a decent camera, at least 7 megapixels, and make an effort at shooting from a reporter’s prespective. I’d have to find scenes, objects and compositions that tell a story. A good one. That could kill the joy in snapping pictures of moments I want to remember. We bought our Canon Elph for our Eurotrip and I’ve used it in a free-form fashion. I try to take a good picture, without shaking and paying attention to lighting. But beyond those concerns, photography is more subconscious thing for me.

For now, I’m happy when my pictures get picked up for online publications. Someday, I’ll re-consider plunging into freelance photography for pay.

This is a good example of taking a picture to capture a moment. This is my take on an ediets recipe for Cuban beans and rice. I’ve added smoked sausages to this dish….because I was in a meaty mood. It’s quite filling and it makes great leftovers. I first used this picture for a group I joined at work. Each of us dumped $20.00 into a pot and the person who lost those most weight by next Feb 2007, takes home all of the cash. We started up a group web site with motivational quotes, goals and healthy recipes. This dish is pretty healthy, as long as you don’t add the meat.

A love story….

Jennie said I should do something like this with my baby.
What do you think? It’s Daisy’s first movie. Maybe she’ll become an internet star!

Welcome home

David’s back from Iraq.
He’s with family in the bay area.
Life is good.

Ponder

Once again…I can’t sleep. I woke up just before 2:00 AM. I’m draining glasses of water to dehydrate from a day of mead and one blue margarita. Downloading pictures from our Canon Elph. Chilling to Jenni Alpert and other mello tracks on my iPod Shuffle playlist for Buffalo.

Mark leaves today. We spent our last weekend eating, drinking and traveling back to the 16th Century.

Happy news….

The Space Shuttle Atlantis is back home…
I love covering happy stories. I know we still had crime, carnage and politics to pay attention to - but these shuttle stories are always thrilling to me. Wave of the future and all that jazz!

At 5:22 — when I watched Atlantis touchdown on Earth, I could feel this collective whoosh of relief with the rest of humankind. Someday…I hope space travel becomes as common as driving down the highway. I know we could do it as long as countires could get settle down and pay attention to the future.

Torn Apart

Elections are just around the corner and I’m geeked about the cool techie stuff I get to play with for our news coverage.

I had a chit chat with a co-worker in the parking lot at 11:00 AM. The sun felt warm and its brightness hurt my eyes.

“The sun is too bright…and that’s sad since I’m from California.”

With this graveyard shift…I feel like a vampire.

Fireworks at Kaufman Stadium

It’s been a tiring week. Lot’s of changes at work. My baby looks tired. She’s lying down next to the desk….watching Mark. I suspect she loves him better than me. When I woke up one evening, I headed to our couch for our nightly cuddle. She gave me a few minutes of petting and rubbing. Then she hopped on the couch with Mark to knaw on her bone. I suppose I’m the beta bitch in this family.

We went to a Royals game last night. It was fun…but kinda sad to watch them lose their 6-run lead over the Mariners. We had dollar hot dogs and I even saw one dude decked out in Oakland A’s gear. Go figure. The stadium didn’t have garlic fries, wifi or concrete slabs falling on the audience. But it’s always a pleasure to join the mob in rooting for the underdog team in their home city.

Last day in New York…

On our last day in New York…we drove down to the falls for lunch. I was amazed by all the sunflowers we saw. I’ve lived in Kansas for 9 months now, and I haven’t seen a lot of sunflowers. Maybe one or two popping up by a mailbox. But that’s it! In New York, we drove by fields of tall, lean sunflowers. I snapped these beautiful blossoms in Sanborn.

More views around the Empire State

Family, food and good times. I had a blast on this vacation to NY. When I told folks I was heading to upstate New York….one co-worker from NYC asked, “Why?” Screw him. I like the Big Apple - city lights, amazing food and that urban energy. But there’s also plenty to love about the place where Mark grew up. We skipped over to Canada. Checked out one of the most amazing feats of human engineering at Niagara Falls. Farmland, sunflowers and of course, the pleasure of hanging out with family.

Watching Atlantis

The whole family tuned in for this morning’s launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis.

We watched NASA TV on CSPAN. Sure it’s nice to get the bios and the commentary from CNN and MSNBC…but watching the launch preps and listening to Mission Control, without media extras, made it a more satisfying experience.

I suppose three-times a charm, when it comes to blast-off. As always, there’s something amazing, beautiful and hopeful when I watch these events. Hope for humankind, anticipation for the future, and a warm, fuzzy feeling in my tummy. Honestly, Daisy was sleeping on the couch. She’s probably tuckered out from the other day at day care. In any event, it was nice to watch the countdown as a family.
