The whole family tuned in for this morning’s launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
We watched NASA TV on CSPAN. Sure it’s nice to get the bios and the commentary from CNN and MSNBC…but watching the launch preps and listening to Mission Control, without media extras, made it a more satisfying experience.
I suppose three-times a charm, when it comes to blast-off. As always, there’s something amazing, beautiful and hopeful when I watch these events. Hope for humankind, anticipation for the future, and a warm, fuzzy feeling in my tummy. Honestly, Daisy was sleeping on the couch. She’s probably tuckered out from the other day at day care. In any event, it was nice to watch the countdown as a family.
Daisy gives the crew a high-5! Best of luck to them.

Happy Birthday Star Trek! Not bad for turning 40. Wheaton posted a sweet tribute to the show….”means that the Enterprise is totally going to grow a ponytail and start dating younger star ships.”
Last night, we went to a Star Trek party at Lola’s. Folks brought their phasers, Star Trek Ken and Barbie dolls and a transporter. The cafe served up virgin Romulan Ales and good coffee. Someone was playing Star Trek trivia cards and I could see Mark itching to get in on that brainy action.
I know the anniversary falls in line with the debut of Kirk’s Enterprise on NBC, 40 years ago. But I’m more of a fan of the Next Generation. Back when I was at Rosary, my friend Kristen was a huge Trekker. I enjoyed talking to her about the new episodes and books. She also tried to make a me a country music fan with no success. I remember reading through her own script for a love story between Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher. She was obviously a nerdy soul, a good writer and she had a goody-two-shoes sense of humor. It was one of the few times I felt like I could bond with someone outside of my circle of skating friends.
And like other even-numbered Trek Films…Nemesis didn’t suck. Thank heavens. I can’t wait for the next film.
