It’s Cold in Topeka

“Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it’s not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. It’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.” — U.S. Senator Barack Obama, 2006 commencement speech at Northwestern University.

Wow, this dude is cool. I want to make my mark in the world…but sometimes I think I’m too small for people to see me, to be relevant, to matter. I tell myself all I need to do is hang on until my next trip home. Home. Where my car wouldn’t grow a sheet of ice on the windows. Where I could were skirts and tank tops. Where I can eat more than Americana meals. Sigh.

There’s a chance for snow in Topeka tomorrow morning. Now I think snow is overrated. Give me sunshine and warm temperatures, any day. In San Diego, I told my Dad I took growing up in California for granted. I ran next to the Pacific and it made my heartache that I didn’t cherish this beautiful state when I was younger…when I could access the beaches and the ocean, whenever I wanted to. Never again.

But it’s going to be cold in Topeka….in a few hours. And that sucks.
