Back to My College Radio Roots

Earlier this month, we checked out the Davis music scene with a KDVS concert. One of my favorite bands from my KALX days, Casiotone of the Painfully Alone, headlined the $5 concert at on the UC Davis campus.

LA-Based Foot Foot opened up the show.

Oh What A Circus

Oh What A Circus, originally uploaded by queenkv.

My hubby works next to a circus. Those oak trees are the site of a showdown between environmental activists, police and the powers that be at UC Berkeley. A judge is expected to decide on a lawsuit challenging Cal’s plan to get rid of the trees and build a new sports center. We’ll wait and see what happens.

Puppy Update

So, it looks like Daisy’s doing better after her second visit to the veterinarian.

Her painful story started Thursday afternoon. She kept licking her front right paw. In the past, she’s been quite good about chewing out the burrs and foxtails from her paws. In fact, she prefers to do it herself instead of letting her humans take a whack. She’s such an independent puppy.

On Friday, I canceled her grooming appointment and dropped by the Vet at Pet Smart. The vet’s office required a full canine exam. That means the medical assistant checked out her heart rate, ears, eyes and then he stuck a thermometer up her butt. Poor Daisy, she hates that part of the exam.

The Last Days of Saturn

Viva my weekend.
I’m taking it easy for these last days of being 29-years-old.

Last month, we ended up in Lodi after the Stockton Asparagus Festival. An air-conditioned wine tasting at the Lodi Visitor’s Center helped revive us. The festival was fun but we were wiped out from walking through 100-degree weather and the mob of hungry people.

Mark and I fell in love with 2 different bottles of Tempranillo wine. One from Uvaggio. Another one by M.Cosentio: 2004 Temp (Kirschenmann Vineyard).

One year ago, Mark and I were living in Kansas. I was working on the 10:00 News and he was telecommuting to Berkeley.

Two years ago, we celebrated Mark’s 30th birthday in Vegas.

And next week, we return to Sin City to celebrate my 30th Birthday. Rock on! My dad’s already planning a tasty menu of yummy Filipino food for our first night in town. I might as well stop eating on Sunday so that I have plenty of room in my tummy.

Feeding the Soul

I’m waking up with aches and pains from our snowboarding weekend in Tahoe. I will post video, pix and thoughts about our snow adventures later.

A couple of weekends ago, we went to mass at St. Ignatius in the City by the Bay. It’s a beautiful Jesuit church next to the University of San Francisco.

Return to Faith

I went to mass at Newman Hall today. It felt good to return to my Berkeley parish. Then we had Zachary’s pizza with Betina, Hans and family. It was nice to catch up and know we can see them again some time soon.

My Moment of Zen

originally uploaded by queenkv.

I’m going home. I accepted a news producer job in Sacramento, California. I am thrilled.

I used to pause at this spot on the UC Berkeley campus and enjoy this beautiful view of the bay. That was 10 years ago. Damn, I’m old.

Now, I’m taking another moment to pause. I’m grateful for how my life has turned out so far. I’ve lived big cities like Chicago, DC and London. I’ve published news reports for Chicago papers and television stations. I worked as a lab coordinator, Starbucks barista, Victoria Secret’s sales clerk, a figure skating coach and more.

I’ll miss Kansas and all the wonderful people here, but I can’t wait to go home in December.

East Bay Lovin’

I always love visiting my alma mater, UC Berkeley. I enjoyed checking out the computer lab at the business school — saying hi to my co-workers and my old boss. So many good memories….and so much good food!

We also found some tasty meals down in Fremont. By the way, wanna a bite of of my lambs’ brains?

UC Berkeley puts hundreds of academic lectures on YouTube

I stumbled on this really cool Cal development on a Nashville blog:
UC Berkeley puts hundreds of academic lectures on YouTube. Talking about kicking Fiat Lux to the next level — sharing the intellectual light online.

Here’s a physics class by Professor Richard A. Muller.

The most interesting and important topics in physics, stressing conceptual understanding rather than math, with applications to current events. Topics covered may vary and may include energy and conservation, radioactivity, nuclear physics, the Theory of Relativity, lasers, explosions, earthquakes, superconductors, and quantum physics.

Cal is so frickin’ cool! Go Bears!

Eating Local: Berkeley Style

FREMONT, CALIF — I went jogging around Mission Blvd this morning. I forget about eating healthy on my Cali trips. So I try to burn off calories with my running shoes.

I’ve also managed to keep up my Eat Local Challenge in the Bay Area. It’s easy to do when so many vegetables and fruits are in season. (I know, California doesn’t have “seasons”….but I think it’s so frickin’ cool we can have roses blooming in the winter.)

I spent my first day in Cali at the best public university in the world: the University of California Berkeley. I knew I was in Berkeley when I walked into this ladies restroom at Kroeber Hall.

Go Bears! Today, we’re rooting for our #6 football team to take down Oregon. That’s #6 in the COUNTRY. Go Bears!

Before my Cali trip, I had major cravings for Cheese Board Pizza. Baked with fresh, local ingredients and cheesy goodness. I also loved it when they brush olive oil over the thin crust pie. Basically, this is California gourmet food with a Berkeley attitude. Their daily specials are always veggie and they always taste good.

Bottom line: Cheese Board makes my favorite pizza in the WORLD.
And I knew my first Cali dinner had to be at this North Berkeley institution.
