Burning Down Memories

It’s been a productive weekend so far: cleaning up, putting away papers, doing laundry, catching up on blogs, Top Chef and cuddling with the puppy. Daisy’s sleeping behind my chair now. I’m trying to avoid rolling over her. Sneaky puppy.

If you have been following me on twitter, then you know I’ve wrapped my 7-Day work week. By Day 5, I had issues keeping my days straight. By Day 7, I felt a little punchy. Still, I’m happy this schedule allowed me to enjoy my Memorial Holiday weekend in Vegas.

Now I’m snyched up with my Saturday thru Wednesday work schedule again. Good times.

I think Sunday morning was one of my crazier days at the station. This was my lead story: A huge fire burning down movie sets at Universal Studios.

Love Affair?

This weekend, BuzzMachine blogs about: Finally covering Obamedia. Jeff makes some scathing points about the media’s treatment of the Illinois Senator on the campaign trail.

And SNL steps up with another parody of the Democratic Debates.

Friends and family I’ve talk to say this is the first time folks have been interested in following a Presidential Primary. It’s been an exciting ride so far.

Valentine Dinners

I’m spending my weekend catching up on my blogs. So, I’m going through this month and trying to expand on some memorable meals.

This year, we spread out our Valentine’s Celebration over three days. We started in Lodi with a decadent tour of the wineries. The next day, we celebrated the romantic holiday at Ella in Downtown Sacramento. My co-worker recommended the spot for special occasion dining and other metrobloggers posted decent reviews.
Overall, Ella was a sophisticated culinary experience. We followed the informed suggestions from our server and savored the delicious servings of fresh shellfish, veggies, meat and more.

I enjoyed the duck and duck risotto. The chef served it medium-rare and that brought out the complex, fleshy tones. I loved the combination of those flavors with the crispy duck skin. We also started-off dinner with a half-dozen raw oysters from the East Coast. Our appetizers were served with the traditional marinara sauce plus a champagne vinegar mignonette.

Candidate Colbert

OK — let’s move away from the depressing football talk and move on to something way more dreamy. I’m currently watching Steven Colbert interview Kasparov. The dude totally didn’t want to take him in chess. Lucky Colbert.

Now my favorite Comedy Central personality has tossing his hat into the race for the White House! I ran this story as my kicker for the 10:00 News…introducing Candidate Colbert!

What now? Will he enter any of the debates? Will anybody take him seriously? And will he get enough funding to run on the Republican ticket and enough South Carolina signatures to run on the Democrat ticket?

Who knows? It will be an entertaining campaign, in any event!

Eating Local at the State Fair

Last weekend, we took a road trip down to Hutchison. We wanted to check out the Kansas State Fair and the Cosmosphere. We had a rockin’ good time at both venues.

We kicked off our road trip with a local favorite in T-Town: Bagel Express. They make the bagels the night before…letting them chill overnight in refrigerator. Then in the morning, the bagel are allowed to rise….and then they bake the doughy circles of goodness. I ordered the Jalapeño Bagel with vegetarian cream cheese. A nice, light way to start of my morning…and very local.

Later on, I was determined to find a healthy, local option for lunch at the State Fair. That’s when we found a trailer for Krehbiels Specialty Meat. They’re based out of McPherson and they boast of the ability to track down the origins of their meat products. I tried out the Buffalo Burger. I was pleasantly surprised by its lean and hearty flavor. It satisfied my meat cravings without weighing me down. I also added their tasty sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. Yum!

links for 2007-09-17

OK — this is a new thing I’m trying out. I kicked started the daily blog feature on my del.icio.us account. That means all the links I’ve bookmarked for the day will be posted around 10:00 PM, nightly. I thought it was kinda neat to have that coincide with my newscast. Basically, these are links to stories and blogs that have caught my eye and make me wonder…about stuff.

We’ll see how this works out.

In our eyes are mirror images…

We ended up spreading out our 2 year anniversary over three days. Tasty food, good drinks, Trivia Smackdown and happy memories. We even got a card from Daisy. Mark said one day she asked for the car keys and she came back with our present: a porcelain mug from Starbucks. He said “china” is the traditional gift on the two year anniversary.

Today, I treated Mark to his anniversary gift: video game shopping at Best Buy. The sales clerk carded me for one of his game choices: Gods of War. It got an NC-17 rating and apparently, I don’t look older than 17. It’s kinda nice to look so young at my ripe age of 29….but it’s also a little embarrassing.

Still, Mark’s enjoying his game, Daisy’s curled up and snoring in her blue chair and I’m blogging about the flavors from our anniversary weekend.

Mark made reservations for the New City Cafe in Topeka. I’ve heard good things about its upscale, American fusion cuisine. We started-off with this tasty Lobster Ravioli…Large pillows of pasta stuffed with cheese and lobster.

Born and Raised…

I found this quiz from Cup of Joe.
He is also a Smart American.

You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you’re opinions are probably well informed.
Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be.

This morning, I read the May issue of Vogue while Daisy was eating her breakfast.

A beautiful essay by Diana Abu-Jaber resonated with me: “The Royal We”. She wrote about growing up hyphenated. Her father pushed for her Jordanian identity while she struggled to include being American into her sense of self. Then she met Queen Noor. Her Majesty found her in the baggage claim after the author gave the Queen a copy of her book. That meeting helped Abu-Jaber claim both cultures as her own.

Caffeinated Memories

It’s difficult to function with out my daily cup of coffee. It’s probably something I should give-up for Lent next year. However, I suspect my non-Caffeinated attitude could be considred a work hazard.

My mom introduced me to coffee drinking. She mixed-up hot coco and coffee as part of my breakfast, before I had to hit the rink around 5:00 AM. I refuse to consider early coffee drinking could have contributed to my vertically challenged height. I’m actually at a an average height in comparison to the rest of my family.

Why Mr. Rogers Was the Best Neighbor Ever

15 reasons why Mr. Rogers was, and always will be, the best neighbor, and one of television’s best entertainers, ever.

This article just put a smile on my face. I’m 29-years-old and I’m still amazed by this man.

read more | digg story

Now that I’m working in television, the positive, child-friendly programming produced by Mr. Rogers and crew seems almost impossible. There’s a drive for the amazing visuals and sound - crazy weather, crime, scandal…things that make people stay glued to their flat screens.

Then there are rare nights when something amazing ends up on prime time. Like last night’s finals for the National Spelling Bee. The best spellers in the country were featured on network television. Granted, they’re tackling words they will NEVER use in normal conversation. However, it’s a fantastic talent to be able to roll those letters off their tongues, after dissecting the definition, orgin and other dictionary clues. Yesterday, some Topeka parents I talked to were not excited over this once-a-year event. One even said, “It was B-O-R-I-N-G.” But, other folks in the newsroom were happy to follow along with the Bee, even turning their eyes away from the screen and trying to figure out the spelling on their own.

Loyal blog followers know I am not the best speller. However, I have an appreciation for positive, child-friendly programming. It gives me hope for that one day when I’m ready to get knocked up and have children of my own. I hope there will be these exciting, educational events that will inspire my own kiddies when they sit down in front of our future 100-inch flat screen TV.

And now, a blast to the past…

In 1969, the US Senate had a hearing on funding the proposed Corporation for Public Broadcasting, but President Nixon wanted it cut in half for the Vietnam War. This is video from the session when Mr. Rogers testified on behalf of Public Television.

Sometimes nice guys do win some….
