Staying up All Night

It’s my weekend and I woke-up ’round 3:00 AM. I suppose that means I’m getting used to my vampire shift at my new station.

Even though I had a morning show to produce on New Year’s Day, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the New Year’s Eve action in Old Sacramento.

After the fireworks, we left Old Sacramento with some time to spare. So we ended-up checking out the California Statehouse ’round 1 AM. It looks beautiful, all lit-up at night. In fact, I think we have a beautiful Capitol City for California. This is the second time I’ve worked in a town that’s the headquarters for state government. During the week, there’s a lot of energy in this city. However Sacramento still has some small town charm. Midtown, Old Sacramento and other neighborhoods have many kitschy, tasty spots and I can’t wait to stumble on them.

Before the fireworks, fire dancers entertained the crowd. They had a new age vibe but their flame sticks kept us warm when it was something like 40-degrees outside.

Monday morning is here and I miss the weekend already. People are popping in and out of the newsroom - many trying to catching up on vacation before November sweeps.

This video put a smile on my face! Mark and I danced around to the music. Daisy jumped up and down, trying to keep up with the funky beats.

A Long Week in Topeka

By Tuesday, it felt like a long week.
Floods, tornado, displaced residents and more add up to a crazy news week in Topeka. One the phone with some network folks in Chicago, they told me: “All the news in your region. You’re hogging it all.” I told her I wouldn’t mind spreading the love.

Really.

Last night, Mark and I did margaritas on the rocks with Tequila from our honeymoon. We ended sleeping with similar dreams: an epic adventure, royal conspiracies in a Dune-like setting. I woke-up without a hangover. Good times.

This is a shot of Crestview Park on Monday. Last week, I ran about two miles by the trees on the other side of the temporary ocean. By now, the creek as receded to normal levels and residents in the area are trying to clean-up the flood damage.

Before my crazy work week, I had an entertaining Cinco de Mayo weekend.

How do people come up with these lists?

OK - I love online lists and games. Mark found one that fits us…sorta: “You may be married to a Filipina if…”. He says I fit about 30% of the things on this list.

And I laughed my butt off at the list below: “You Know You’re Filipino When…”

I matched-up with several items on this list. Other descriptions fit perfectly for my family and friends. Such as…

  • “You have relatives whose nicknames consist of repeated syllables like “Jun-Jun,” “Ling-Ling,” and “Mon-Mon.” Mine by the way was “Che-Che.”
  • You call the parents of your friends and your own parents’ friends “Tito” and “Tita.”

An Early Valentine Celebration

We got a late start to the weekend. We spent Friday night toasting one of my co-workers who’s moving on to bigger and better things. The farewell party involved lots of people, alcohol and dancing. It was the first time I went dancing in a while. Granted, it was in somebody’s living room and the music was tuned to the greatest hits channel from Digital Cable. Still, it was dancing and I had fun boogieing with co-workers and new people.

We didn’t get home until 4:00 AM. I remember taking Daisy out to do her business and that’s about it. Mark said I passed out and he had to put me to bed.

What a good hubby! I’d do the same for him.

After waking up with a little hangover, we slowly started up our Saturday morning with homemade french toast and bacon.

My honey is brilliant when it comes to breakfast. So he took whipped up the tasty French Toast. He had a batter of eggs, cinnamon and milk…I think. He coated sourdough bread slices with the batter and fried them up over the stove. I took care of the coffee and bacon. The apartment was covered in bacon smoke for a bit. Thankfully, I didn’t burn too many slices.

It was a yummy breakfast and it helped us recover from the heavy night of drinking.

Ponder

Once again…I can’t sleep. I woke up just before 2:00 AM. I’m draining glasses of water to dehydrate from a day of mead and one blue margarita. Downloading pictures from our Canon Elph. Chilling to Jenni Alpert and other mello tracks on my iPod Shuffle playlist for Buffalo.

Mark leaves today. We spent our last weekend eating, drinking and traveling back to the 16th Century.

More views around the Empire State

Family, food and good times. I had a blast on this vacation to NY. When I told folks I was heading to upstate New York….one co-worker from NYC asked, “Why?” Screw him. I like the Big Apple - city lights, amazing food and that urban energy. But there’s also plenty to love about the place where Mark grew up. We skipped over to Canada. Checked out one of the most amazing feats of human engineering at Niagara Falls. Farmland, sunflowers and of course, the pleasure of hanging out with family.

Ribs and Paneer…

Last night, we checked out the Texas Roadhouse. We had to wait a bit for a table - but we watched some Olympic luge and ice dancing at the bar. I think there’s a Texas Roadhouse just off of 101 - past the Monterey exit and before Pismo.

Waiters and bus boys break out into line dancing every now and then. Our server promised us the meat would fall of the ribs. She was right. It tasted so moist and the sauce had a great tangy note. I filled up on a Caesar salad before (a bland one…but it made me get some greens into my diet) - so I could only finsh a quarter of these ribs.
