Film About MIT Cardcounting Team

This look like a hot new film, especially with Kevin Spacey playing a MIT professor.

Paying for college is painful…these math geeks make Vegas poney some financial aid.

The new trailer for the film “21″ which is based on the best-selling book “Bringing Down The House” by Ben Mezrich, a fact-based story about a group of MIT students who learn to count cards and take Vegas for millions. Starring Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, and Lawrence Fishburne, written by Allan Loeb and directed by Robert Luketic.

Reach out and touch someone…

Daisy is sleeping in my blue chair. Last year, Mark drove a huge truck and transported that chair and other items from storage back here to Kansas. I imagine the puppy likes to think he brought back that chair for her. Sometimes she gives me an annoyed look when I sit in “her” chair.

Silly puppy.
With Mark gone, Daisy and I have more involved, one-sided conversations. She makes a couple of grunts and moans about her time at Day Care. Apparently it’s a tough job being such a cute puppy. Then I try to explain my work day. She looks at me like she almost understands the stress, adrenaline rush, frustrations and comedic situations I deal with in the newsroom. But I like I said, it’s a one-sided conversation.

So, I’ve also been exploring the world of social networking. Since people keep adding me as a friend in facebook, I’ve pimped out my facebook profile with new applications and pictures. I also started using last.fm this week. If you use either online app — add me please. Let’s dish about music, movies and stuff. It would be nice to have a two-sided conversation through a web site.

More Daisy Loving….

Why do we produce this little quicktime movies about my dog? Because she’s our baby. We’re still looking for a Halloween costume for her. I think she’d look cute as Princess Leia.

The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Version of the World’s Largest Things

Ok….in Lucas…in addition to being the grassroots art capital of Kansas, it’s also the home of: “The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Version of the World’s Largest Things.” Now, it’s a damn shame we couldn’t get inside the bus…but we saw something that evoked deja vu.

Say good-bye to Cody’s….

Cristine had a post about bookstores closing in the Bay Area…and she linked to this SF Gate article.

Cody’s on Telegraph will close on July 10, 2006. It’s been at that location for 43 years….and it was one of my favorite bookstores in Berkeley.

A damn shame.

Silver Screen Musings…from the ‘burbs…

Hey folks…my honey and I caught up with some silver screen hits in the last week or so. Typically, we try to hit the theaters on Birch Street (in Brea) in order to get a little buzz on before the film. I’ve timed movie trailers to take up to 15 minutes or so, after the posted movie time. However, sometime’s it’s nice to catch new trailers. Mark’s excited about the new Doom movie with the Rock. It cracked us up to see camera angles that mimic the game play. I’m also thrilled about the first movie on the Chronicles of Narnia. It was one of my favorite fantasy series in grade school. I must have read each book in the series by C.S. Lewis at least two to three times. Seven books in all. Something about a good story providing a much needed escape from tedious Catholic school studies. In grade school, I had a longing for the magic, heroic children, talking animals and adventure. I’d like to get the Narnia series for my kids someday.

Back to current movies. Here’s a quick run-down.

Thanks to my bro…I’m a fan of Joss Whedon. Thanks to me, Mark’s also a fan of the Buffy and Angel series. So, when we saw the trailer for Whedon’s Serenity - we knew we had to check it out.

Emeryville Market Musings….

EMERYVILLE — We’re back in the Bay Area so Mark can catch up on work and pick up his nifty new laptop. Today, I grabbed lunch at the international market place in Emeryville. I got a combo plate from the Thai food stand. Pad Thai and Beef Curry. Hearty and yum. Lunchtime forces strangers to be generous with table space. I was no exception. A couple of yuppies joined my table with a word of thanks. A dude with the grande quesdilla asked me if my combo dish was spicy. I said no. I tried to read my USA Today….but some folks feel like they need to share their dating adventures with the rest of the world….and at top volume.

One of his co-workers launched into a bitch session about a date he went on with a gril from his office. Apparently, they went dancing with one of her guy friends. At the end of the night, he said the girl told him she got the number for the club owner. “We can go here for free, next time,” he recalled her saying. His office mates expressed some concern about that. Apparently it’s not in good taste to be scoring digits while you’re on a date with another guy. His female co-workers said the girl may have said that to get a reaction out of him.

A few days later, they made plans to see a movie with one of his female friends. They spent about an hour trying to figure out which movie to see. He said they agreed to figure it out later. When later rolled around, his female friend called and told him the girl couldn’t go to the movies with them. “She said under her breath something about going to a wedding with her baby’s daddy,” he told his office mates.

The next day, he said when he brought the failed movie attempt, she told him she totally forgot about it.

Damn, thank God I’m not dating any more. It sounds rough out there!

The Lord beams up Scotty…

[from http://www.hollywood-north.net/]

James Doohan passed away yesterday morning. He was 85. The Canadien-born actor is best known for the role of Scotty, on the Orginal Star Trek Series and movies. He also made a cameo apperance on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The dude was such an inspiration - to a generation of scientists and engineers - even some of the brain dudes at NASA. He, along with the Enterprise crew, made TV viewers believe they could be more than just Earth-bound.

I like this picture of Scotty - ’cause my bro and I once starred as Enterprise engineers at the Star Trek Experience in Universal Studios. That was the best attraction - ever. We have a tape of the show we did…along with my skating buddy, Megan. She was pretty enough to be casted on bridge. My dad was casted as a Klignon. Go dad! Apparently, the little Klignon dog got hungry and ate my dad’s arm.

As engineers, my bro and I wore the super-cool engineer uniforms, like Scotty. The director told us to bang at the boards….like we were keying in stuff to the computer. Then to pull at our hair after 10 seconds. Finally, we had to choke each other. Easy. We’re brother and sister after all. So, I guess whatever happened to the starship…well it was engineerings fault. Since I’m the older sister, I’m sure my little bro screwed something up.

In any event, I miss Scotty.

Layer Cake

[from allposters.com]

Mark and I saw Layer Cake last Saturday night. Back in London - Layer Cake posters covered the Tube stops. Every morning - on my way to the Oxford Circus station - I passed the FCUK store. Layer Cake ads made it into this store as well….just like in the movie. So, thanks to a decent British ad campaign - my brain was washed just enough to be curious about the first film directed by Matthew Vaughn. The dude also produced Lock, Stock and Smoking Barrel.

The film had plenty of subplots weaving in an out of the layered theme - society, the criminal underground, professional courtesy and more. By American standards, it’s unconventional and quirky - which makes it a refreshing change for Hollywood formula flicks. (Lord knows I still have a special place in my heart for those movies, especially the chick flicks - and I couldn’t convince Mark to watch “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” “Watch it when you’re mad at me,” he said.) Layer Cake get’s gory - but it doesn’t celebrate the violence. Overall, I thought it the story was clever, the actors were first-rate and the action got my blood-pumping.
