Exploring the other side of the rainbow

What Ya Waitin’ For?

Today, my puppy rocked out her run near Alamo Creek with some Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Young Folks and more. We were able to run about 1.5 miles before she had to go potty. Such a good puppy!

Sigh. It was bittersweet to see the Frontier sign standing on the Las Vegas Strip. Last fall, I used video of the casino’s implosion in one of my newscasts. Closing down the Frontier marked the end of an era. It was part of a time when Vegas was an adult playground and legends like Sinatra, Newton and Elvis ruled the Strip. All good things…

Pushing Myself

I clocked another 3 miles of running by Alamo Creek this morning. I needed the cardio after my deep-fried eating fest in Stockton this weekend.

Last week, I landed my axel at Vacaville Ice Sports. I felt like a rock star. I also feel like I’ve made so much progress since I first stepped on the ice in Topeka. When I was competing, this jump was my Achilles’ heel. It messed with my head and it took me forever to master it. About three years, I think. But it also serves as the basically building block for more difficult jumps. After landing the damn thing, I was able to move on to those jumps and more.

I think I’ll managed to get all my double jumps back after this. I’m super happy with last weekend’s sharpening job on my blades. I thought it was worth the 1 1/2 drive to Novato. (yes, Mark drove…but that’s not the point!)

More Flavors from Wine Country

Today, I went for a short run before my skating session. The last few weeks, I’ve been treating these sessions like a workout: rolling out of the house without warming up or stretching. Running about 1.25 miles helped me get more into athlete mode when I stepped on the ice this morning.

And yesterday, I ran 3 miles by Alamo Creek. That was my first time hitting 3 miles and it felt good. Doctors, nurses, older people and anyone with an opinion like to remind me that things tend to go downhill with a woman’s body when she hits her 30’s. I figure running, yoga and skating will help me battle that downhill trend. Besides, it all keeps me sane with my graveyard shift.

Plus — I need that exercise because I like to eat food like this. One weekend in Sonoma, we did lunch at the Bistro. We were the last lunch customers seated before the restaurant closed for its afternoon break. It was small, intimate spot with tasty food. I seared my tongue on the spicy tomato broth over these mussels. The shellfish tasted fresh and plump. I finished the broth with my bread and spoon.

Winter Bunny

I woke up with sore, stiff joints this morning. Today, I may use my last day of my weekend to recover from jogging, yoga and skating. The exercises helps me stay sane with my graveyard shift.

It’s been about 7+ years since I tried a double salchow.

Building up the Core

It hurts to laugh.

My core muscles are so sore from last night’s yoga class in Davis.
I also used those muscles to keep me upright on my double-toe jumps during this morning’s freestyle session at Vacaville Ice Sports. I’ve been off the ice for 4 months and it’s nice to know that I can still skate. I’d like to make these freestyle sessions a weekly thing, as long as I’m not too busy with work.

Good times.

Here’s a shot of me inside the control booth. I just finished up producing one of our weekend morning shows. It was a good day, with a live shot from the Capital Air Show, plus live pictures of racers at a St. Patty-themed marathon.

Skating champion Bowman, 40, found dead

A sad day for the figure skating world.
Skating champion Bowman, 40, found dead - Los Angeles Times

Two-time U.S. figure skating champion Christopher Bowman, known as “Bowman the Showman” for his crowd-pleasing skills and as “Hans Brinker From Hell” for his unruly lifestyle, was found dead at a North Hills motel Thursday afternoon.

I used to train with Bowman in Burbank. This was back when he had Frank Caroll as his main coach. He was crazy, fearless and arrogant. The ice was his stage and he made skating look easy.

He was only 40-years-old.

Once more, with feeling

My body feels dazed and confused. It’s torn between wanting some shut-eye to wanting to keep moving with all the little chores leading up to our big move. I spent the day organizing stuff after producing the morning show.

Good times. The movers drop by tomorrow. Soon, we’ll end-up sleeping on the floor with our baby.

This weekend, I squeezed in one more skating session at the Expocentre.

My Favorite Skating Partner

I’m happy with Mark’s progress on the ice.
We’ll have him jumping in no time!

I like holding his hand as we glide around the rink.
I also like having him by the railing when I try to jump. His faith and love helped me get over some really bad falls, on the ice and in the rest of my life.

Something out of my back pocket…

So my bubble butt ends up on the morning news this week. We had live reports on Topeka’s new skating club and Learn to Skate program on Good Morning Kansas.

We helped our morning reporter skate. And then our meteorologist said he wanted to see me do a “360.” Our web producer said it must be nice to be able to pull something like this out of my back pocket. I agreed.

My Moment of Zen

originally uploaded by queenkv.

I’m going home. I accepted a news producer job in Sacramento, California. I am thrilled.

I used to pause at this spot on the UC Berkeley campus and enjoy this beautiful view of the bay. That was 10 years ago. Damn, I’m old.

Now, I’m taking another moment to pause. I’m grateful for how my life has turned out so far. I’ve lived big cities like Chicago, DC and London. I’ve published news reports for Chicago papers and television stations. I worked as a lab coordinator, Starbucks barista, Victoria Secret’s sales clerk, a figure skating coach and more.

I’ll miss Kansas and all the wonderful people here, but I can’t wait to go home in December.
