Stumbling on New Comfort Food

I’m enjoying my Sunday with some indie rock/pop/electronica on KSPC. This weekend, we started covering our bare white walls with posters from Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. We also started hanging up pictures from our wedding day. I get all warm and fuzzy inside watching this space transform more into our home.

My vampire shift for work is physically and mentally challenging. So, I try to find balance on my days off: going to yoga classes, catching up on chores, playing with the puppy, meeting up with friends and trying new food spots.

In San Francisco, Susan and Tom introduced us to Farmer Brown’s a few weekends ago. It’s all about local, organic farm food with a Southern twist. These angel biscuits mixed cornbread with a touch of jalapeño. The honey butter spread nicely complimented the sweet and spicy tones.

California Eats

I called my dad about my first experience using the live chopper for a breaking news segment this morning. It was a crazy time. Thankfully, folks in the booth didn’t let me crash the segment (not the chopper…the actually show). My dad said I sounded happy. I am happy. I’m still training but I’m thrilled with everything I’ve gotten my hands on so far.

So far so good.

My dad and mom checked out the outside of my new job a few weeks ago. We’re grateful they came up from So Cal to help us unpack our insane number of boxes. This is our first dinner inside our new house. We picked-up duck, sesame chicken, green beans and beef and chicken noodle soup from the Golden Palace.

People from the California Wine Bar and work all recommended Tapa the World in Midtown. We had a fantastic spread of little Spanish dishes like these olives and paella. The light green ones had a buttery aftertaste. Yum!

San Francisco Treat

Currently listening to the Amelie soundtrack and catching up on Top Chef and my blog reading. I am wiped out from the work week. I know it’s only Thursday.

My positive vibes recharge after watching shows about food and reading about amazing meals. Over the years, I found more comfort in good food and my waistline showed that. I try to balance out the adventurous eating with running and yoga.

In California, I drove almost 600 miles — from Sacramento to Fresno. It wiped me out almost every day, but tasty California meals helped me unwind from those road trips — Indian, Thai, California pizza and more. I also found time to run a few miles in Fremont.

Then we headed over to San Francisco to check out the Cal v. Oregon game and visit our favorite San Francisco couple, Susan and Tom.

Many tourists with rental cars try to stop by Treasure Island. I can’t get enough of this beautiful view of the City by the Bay. When my brother came home from basic training, we stopped here to say hello to San Francisco. I remember a dorm-mate introduced me to this beautiful sight at night…before we hopped on a cable ride from Powell Street to the Wharf. We asked some European visitors to snap this shot for us. Sunny weather, sea breeze, the cityscape, the Bay Bridge and a wonderful weekend with my hubby — frozen in time on our digital camera.

Susan, Tom, Mark and I couldn’t get enough of the foie gras at Piperade. Susan made dinner reservations at this Basque-inspired haunt on Battery Street. On the web site, the chef describes his food as “West Coast Basque” cuisine. Fresh, decadent ingredients with a rustic touch. This was one of the best meals of my California vacation — amazing haute cuisine in a cozy brick dining spot…good friends, cocktails and conversation.

Driving ‘Round the Golden State

FRESNO, CALIF — I’m sipping a Tamarack Ale at the Seqoia Brewing Company in Downtown Fresno. A tasty local specialty, with woody tones and some nice hoppiness. My co-workers would think I’m starting TGIP early. (AKA Thank God It’s PayDay).

I love driving around my home state. This morning, I took Highway 99 down to Fresno. I passed signs for Yosemite, Modesto and other points beyond the highway. I passed an overturned semi trailer. I passed dozens of workers picking grapes. In fact, I passed countless acres of farmland, rich with harvest.

A Veggie Twist on Laarb

I had a craving for my Dad’s laarb. He does amazing things with ground beef and I love coming up to his cooking.

On the way to the store, I called him for the ingredients. At the end of our conversation, I mentioned I was trying it all with some fake meat — tofu grounded up to look like beef. I imagined the look of disbelief on his face.

Here’s my vegetarian version of my Dad’s Laarb. I used Morning Star’s grilled beef starter. I could totally taste the difference between ground beef and this substitute because I knew what was going into the dish. But I’d love to do a blind taste test some day and see if my palate knows the difference.

Cooking Veggie

For St. Patrick’s Day, we took a roadtrip down the Turnpike to Emporia. We toasted the holiday at Natasha’s.

If you get a chance, I hope you’d consider voting for this pix. The more votes it get’s the more chances it has to be published in the next issue of JPG Magazine. How neat is that?

So, I gave up meat for Lent. This usually makes cooking a challenge for me, since I like to craft my meals around the meat-of-the-day. I’m still cool with chicken and seafood, I just made a promise to myself to avoid red meat.

So far…I’ve managed to avoid red meat. At work, someone’s mom treated us to a pizza meal for his birthday. Very sweet, but all the pies were meat pies! Eeck! I stuck with the bread sticks. I also ended-up picking off the pepperoni slices, after I saw another co-worker do so.

I decided to embrace tofu as my meat-of-the-day.

This is an Alfredo risotto with tofu, grounded-up and seasoned to look and taste like ground beef. During this kitchen session, I tried out Morning Star’s Sausage Crumbles. Not bad…I’d love to a do a side-by-side taste test with ground beef. Maybe after lent.

I Heart Home Cooking

It felt amazing to go home last weekend. It’s been almost year since I hopped on 57 East and drove across the country to my new gig in Kansas. Over the last year, I’ve visited San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland and Vegas….but last weekend was the first time in almost a year since I’ve stepped foot in Southern California.

We’ve made a home in Kansas…but my heart and my roots are still locked up in California.

For the last few months, I was looking forward to this homecoming — flying in San Diego and eating a yummy home-cooked meal. I kept telling my parents that I was tired of American food. Sadly, I don’t have the time to devote to whipping up chicken adobe or pansit. I know how to make both dishes!

So on this weekend - I ignored my diet and indulged in some really good comfort food. Plus, I managed to fit in a jog down N. Barranca Ave. in Covina. That should have helped knock off a couple hundred calories. Still, I wanted to taste home and a stupid diet wasn’t going to get in the way of that.

Crispy lichon. Thank God I’m still a carnivore! I toyed with the idea of going veggie for this diet andI figured that would be torture in Kansas - one of the top beef producing states in the U.S. As for this fab spread of Filipino food, I headed straight for the crispy pigskin. Crunchy golden skin with a nice layer of pig fat underneath. It tasted like biting into juicy and meaty bliss. Yes, it’s oh-so-bad for me! But heck, the last time I checked, my cholesterol levels and other body stats were good for a gal like me…about 2 years away from 30.

We spent a day in Berkeley. Mark had to be in the east bay because he was on call for work…thankfully, he didn’t have to work.
