it’s sunny but cold outside…does that make any sense? i don’t think so….
it’s been a mellow day….plugging along with configuring movable type. what a neat application 🙂
oh yeah and i’m working as well…..busy little bee that I am….
I got an email from my bro. He’s in the army and he managed to make contact with my best friend from my childhood days….she’s a 1st LT in the Army now….stationed Asia. Gosh I miss her! I’ve known Vicky since I was five year’s old….people thought we were sisters. she’s only one year younger than me and our birthdays are only 6 days apart….
I remember when she didn’t want to grow up. So after her 14th b-day – she counted her aging by halves – 14 1/2 for one year, 15 for the next, 15 1/2 for the following year….I don’t remember how long that went for.
She was so full of energy and ambition. She was fearless, at least to me was. Probably still is – doing army stuff.
We both competed in figure skating and I remember her attacking each jump with all her might. She skated hard and she fell hard and she always got up to try again.
We would sleep over at each other’s houses. And wake up at the crack of dawn for the next freestyle session. I remember her dad had a VHS camera and we recorded our own TV talkshow – no script, just come chaotic questions and staging….no real direction. We’d play different characters and our costumes consisted of blankets, parent clothing, and competition dresses….
You know how much our parents spent on those dresses? Each orginal design was about $500 a pop….more or less…probably more by now. Marie – our dress designer would have us bring in routine music and she would listen and imagine our bodies wrapped up in beautiful cloths and beads.
we laughed and cried together. we fought and supported each other. we competed against each other. yeah, it was just competition…but who doesn’t want to win? and there can only be one winner.
my classics professor once lectured about those ancient Olympian Games….the winner of all the events (track and field and more) walked away as the deity for the day – crowned with laurel leaves – and took home a huge pot of olive oil. There was no such thing as 2nd and 3rd place.
I miss her alot.
and I miss being a kid.
