Many of us talk about making exercise part of our daily routines. We know about the benefits of staying healthy, keeping our metabloism up, eating right…..stuff like that. However, whenever I see a Chicago runner taking to the icy streets and snowy sidewalks – I feel a bit shallow in making all those claims. I wish I could join those runners – but I don’t think my Cali blood is thick enough to endure staying outside with the wind chill and snow, for more than simple transportation from school and to the dorms….and some shopping.
I bought a new backpack from the Art Store on Oak. Yeah! A real messenger bag. It looks tough enough to withstand all the books and papers I like to jam into my bags. Last night, shopping put me in a better mood.
We had lecture in MTC – I had a seat with a view. The windows open up to Lake Michigan – it seems endless. I couldn’t stop looking at the lake – serene, expansive. It’s difficult to imagine another state is on the other side. It’s distracting – it invited me to zen out, to let my eyes glaze over, to day dream. There’s a dark stripe of blue bordering the event horizon. The trees in the parking lot were fragile, spindly, lonely. They also have to be strong enough to stand out there, all alone. The sun peeked in and out. I saw a runner making his way through the lake-side parking lot.
The lake is beautiful…..but it’s not the Pacific.
