It was such a pleasure to see my family at Jennie and Scott’s wedding. During my Kansas years, I managed to schedule a weekend away from Topeka for this lovely event in La Jolla.
My broadcast news professors at Medill warned us that we will work on holidays and miss a lot of family events.
Inside the Northwestern News studios, they warned students that the TV news industry was tough on anyone who wanted to start a family.
In Sacramento, I watched my colleagues call their kids from the producer pod. They made sure they had lunch money or something tasty in brown bags. They checked if kids packed a jacket after watching our meteorologist forecast rain for the afternoon. During the summer break, I’ve watched others bring kids into the newsroom and set up an arts and crafts table next to their desk.
In So Cal, I watched my parents work very hard to give us a good life. They juggled their careers with my freestyle sessions, my brother’s piano lessons and our school commitments. They made it possible for us to chase after dreams, like Olympic gold medals.
Before Father’s Day, I produced this photo segment for our morning show.
I remember my dad’s colleague took us on a sailing trip around Long Beach. He wanted to know why I was majoring in American Studies at Cal. He questioned my career goal of working in TV news. I think he was trying to make a point that I was making a mistake with both and that I was setting myself up for failure.
“She can do it,” my dad said on the boat.
I also produced this photo segment ahead of Mother’s Day.
