I drove down to Newport Beach – yesterday.
Paradise.
Before my beach time….I felt battered by losing the job in NY….stressed about finding work in TV News….and overwhelmed by wedding stuff.
Then I got to the beach. Warm sunshine, sea breeze and the sand squishing between my toes.
Heaven.
The nice thing about visiting this beach – it was the middle of the week and in the middle of April….people are still working and going to school….Sure, we had some beach bums invading my turf…but there plenty of room for everyone.
The first cold rush of water is always shocking…and you think your feet will numb off…or something…
Afterwards…it’s the most refreshing thing to do – walking on the water and letting the waves crash at me legs and drenching the cuffs of my capri pants….just bought them….I need to get more shorts.
This kid looked brave…but the waves ended up chasing her back to her mom and dad. I remember going to the beach after the morning freestyle sessions at the rink. Mr. Kwan said the ocean water was good for you. After dipping into the water, trying to synch up leaps with the waves crashing and laughing like kids – he would then drive us skaters back to the rink for a few more hours of practice. Heck, I always felt better after our beach time – I felt like I could go another round of falls, frustration and cursing. We had dirty little mouths when we pushed our way through the throng of skaters…everyone trying to land that double axel – run through a routine – avoiding everyone else.
Now…..I get to drive down to the beach…and stay there for as long as I want…sipping water and finishing up “Sum of All Fears…”
A complicated Tom Clancy book with too many subplots.
Now, I’m off to Vegas….just bought a dress for the wedding and my dad put a down payment on the reception site. It looks like I’m going through with this marriage business….I’m joking. I’m happy.
But I want a job….maybe all I have to do is pull a slot handle…and one will pop up at the next broadcaster’s conference…in Vegas.
Resumes printer. Tapes organized.
Wish me luck.
