Last month, we went to the LA County Fair. I have some fond memories of the fair….my dad took my friends and I to the fair. I remember all that yummy fried food, fast rides and bizarre exhibits. I remember watching people make life-size sand castles.

For me the fair still has its timeless charm – agressive carnies man the games, the rides still take your breath away and the food is still fatty, fried and irresistble.

We also caught the San Dimas Day parade. It featured high school bands and classic cars. We also saw Miss San Dimas, Mrs. San Dimas and Little Miss San Dimas….no relation.

The folks on the parade floats tossed out beads.

Mark also won this cute doggie for me. We named him Ferris.

You could smell the BBQ grills from a mile away. The hearty aroma made both of our tummys grumble.

In an effort to avoid pigging out – we shared a sampler platter of bbq sausage, beef and chicken. Tasty! I could taste all that sweet and succulent bqq sauce in each bite. It was also terribly filling.

Mark get’s into the spirit of the fair. OK – I made him go up there for this hokey pic. What a good husband!

The fair looks even cooler at night. Bright lights and more jangly ride noises. My parents worried about the crowds…but we got lucky – we didn’t feel hemmeed in by kids and drunks. It was a friendly fair.

Dessert time! I love funnel cake and this one didn’t disappoint me. Betina claims the best funnel cake is at Knott’s Berry Farm but I think the one at the fair could rival it. Sweet, doughy bread covered with powedered sugar and whip cream. You have the option to gussy it up with strawberries or blackberries. It’s like biting into a slumber party – it’s so sweet.

Mark had a craving for deep-fried oreos. I was morbidlly curious about this sweet treat after listening to a B-Side show on the State Fair. The B-Side crew tasted the fried options at the fair…including deep-fried oreos. Our serving came with powdered sugar, whip cream and strawberries. I was weirded out by our taste test. You expect oreos to be crunchy with a creamy filling. Instead, we bit into a crispy fried crust and ended up with a soggy oreo cookie. I expect my oreos to maintain it’s cookie crunch until I dunk it in milk. So this was weird. Thankfully, it satisfied Mark’s craving.

Then we got in line for the ferris wheel. The ride operators sent us into the couples line.
