LAWRENCE — I’m chilling at a Christian Coffee Shop/Bookstore – Signs of Life. Mark’s meeting me for a late night concert by Deerhoof. They’re from the Bay Area. I’m thrilled we could find some quirky indie music in this part of the country.
Lawrence is a college town. It’s home to the KU Jayhawks. My news director described it as the Berkeley of the Midwest. It has a nice left-leaning vibe – without the dirty streets and angry derelicts….as far as I can see. Some folks at our Lawrence news room warned me about muggings on Mass. Ave. Thus, I’m waiting for my husband at a well-lit coffeeshop. I assured the staff that I walked around the Berkeley streets at un-godly hours. I also pointed out that I took self-defense classes and I knew how to scream like a girl.
Lawrence is about a half-hour drive from Topeka. I’m training with the company’s web team. Today, I took nearly 200 pix of the Allen Fieldhouse – for a future virtual stadium map. That was my cardio workout for the day – walking up and down stadium stairs – snaping pix from every section. We also did a 360 degree picture from the middle of the court. When we got back to the office, I played with a Quicktime App and created a proto-type for a seamless panorama video. Neato.
I found a yummy South American restaurant here. Tonight, I had lunch at Zen Zero. I burnt my taste buds on the savory Green Cury rice dish. Wow….it’s not the best Thai food – but it covers my rice craving. Oh yeah.
Off to the concert. Kansas is not Cali…but I’m finding ways to make it home for me.
