BERKELEY — I’m chilling inside Sufficient Grounds with a Thai Iced Coffee. It’s across the street from Spens-Black, my first res hall in Berkeley. I used to read my NY Times and drink coffee at this cafe, before my classes. Yummy sandwiches, with fresh baked bread and a tasty pasta salad. I used to piss off students and professors when I brought in a Sufficient Grounds sandwich box into lecture….hell, when you’re hungry, you gotta eat. My DBHS buddy, Seon, used to work on her essays at the cafe. Her Korean cliche knew the owner and they always had dibs on the big side table. Seon dropped out of Cal during our second year to become a clothing designer…behind her Mom’s back. Her mom had her own lining of clothing. Eventually, she ended up a design school just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. I called her after 9/11. She wasn’t hurt and her school was still in one piece. She told me it was disconerting to go to class and see the ruins of those massive buildings.
Today, our co-workers took the “newlyweds” to Henry’s for lunch. We had lot’s of congrats and best wishes. Henry’s is our default spot for lunches about people moving on and making big transistions in life. The service was slow and forgetful….but it was quite nice to be surrounded by such cool people. We talked about news, hurricanes, old HCS Cons and a possible application to shut down all services and wireless connections on laptops during an exam. I got cupcakes and cookies from the Virginia Bakery on Shattuck for dessert.

Our co-workers picked up some cool gifts from our registry, including this spiffy Columbia tent. Mark wanted to test it out last week. We can’t wait to go camping.

We also got this kick-ass Apple Powerbook as a wedding gift…from the registry inside our hearts. I love it. She’s my baby!
This morning, I went running by the Bay. I parked the car and Point Emery and took off. Only a few exercise-minded folks on the bike/pedestrian trail. I loved looking at the fog settling over the Bay. Almost everyone had sweaters on, but I think the extra clothing would have hampered my stride after working up a sweat. Nice and flat. No traffic lights. It’s a lovely jog.
I miss living here.
