I’m screwed without my glasses.
I hated wearing my glasses when I was on the ice. There was always the fear of them flying off in the middle of one of my jumps. Without my spectacles – all I could see was a blur of skaters and coaches.
Eventually, I chose blurry vision over wearing my glasses for freestyle sessions. I squinted to see the faint border of the rink’s railings.
“Move it, please!”
And I learned how to guess another skater’s position/distance by the sounds of her blades and cursing.
I ordered my first pair of contact lenses in 6th grade. It took me an hour to pop them before practice. It felt like a miracle to be able to see where I was going on the ice.
Someday – I’ll pony up the cash to pay for laser eye surgery.
It would be nice to be able to see where I’m going – all the time.
